Action is born out of nothingness


Question: Dear Sir,
There is one question on the ‘action’ that has been playing on my mind since you sent me the mail about the desireless action.
You said when there is no self, there is purity in being and hence the desireless action takes place. By this do you mean actions harmonious to the universe, to the Truth?
Answer: There is no basis of ‘Action’. If there is a basis, it is an ‘Activity’.
What is a Basis? If it has a base, it has an origination. Also, if it has a base, it gives rise to something and all originations are dependent. There is nothing that originates and is yet independent. All dependent, or interdependent originations are suffering.
Action is born out of ‘nothingness’. That is, if you insist that it MUST be born out of something.
Baseless action is action. Meaningless action is action. Directionless action is action. Purposeless action is action. Horrible, isn’t it? See how the ego recoils.
Now, do not fall into the trap that these words can be. Do not think that action is utter mindlessness. Or that action takes place in absence of thought. If Self is all, and all is but the image of Self, the mind too is Self. No need to shrink away from it.
Action does involve the mind as well. Action does have a base, action does have a meaning, action has a direction and a purpose as well.
Just figure out.

A war between Arjun and Krishna || Rajan Chaudhary, on Bhagvad Gita


Questioner (Q): While reading Ramana Maharshi, I have observed that out of all the scriptures Ramana Maharshi has quoted Krishna and Bhagavad Gita the most number of times. I have also seen this with other masters as well, that Bhagavad Gita holds a very special place in spirituality. Why is that so? What makes Bhagavad Gita so special?
Rajan Chaudhary (AP): The Bhagavad Gita is special because it is narrated in a very worldly, very practical setting.
Bhagavad Gita is not guru sitting under a shady banyan tree in the tranquil silence of a holy jungle, sermonising to some pliant, obedient, willing student. Neither is the setting tranquil at all, nor is the sermon academic at all, and least of all is the student pliant and willing. It's a real-life setting in which you do not have the luxury of a formal podium, a formal appointment, a formal code of conduct. It's the war chariot, not the temple. There are armies around, not silent idyllic trees and cute animals, and the one being spoken to is a biased, emotional and unwilling listener, not some keen student.
The outcome of the conversation would decide actively the fate of many million residents of the kingdom, not merely get entered academically in some pages of another holy book. Life and death depend on this discourse in the literal sense, not just figuratively. Literally, life and death depend on this discourse. Therefore, this discourse has so much potency.
Arjuna is a real-life student, not the ideal disciple. Therefore, Krishna’s persuasion has cutting-edge mastery. If you are preaching to the converted, how much forcefulness do you need? Nothing. But here, you see that Krishna has to be at his not merely godly, but actually tactical best. Arjuna is forcing Krishna to be at his best because Arjuna is such a reluctant listener. And therefore, that which is now proceeding from Krishna is extremely charged and potent. Nothing less than words of the highest intensity and highest potency would do because Arjuna is almost wrestling with Krishna; therefore, Krishna has to exercise and demonstrate all his power.
You very well know how at one point Krishna actually has to demonstrate his own immense form, Virāṭ-rūpa to Arjuna—why is that needed? Because Arjuna is one tough nut to crack, and that's why the Gita is special. It is spoken to someone who is caught in emotionality; it is spoken to someone who doesn't want to listen; it is spoken to someone who has to be convinced to fight and kill his own kith and kin. To fire on your own blood your own relatives is no easy job, or is it?
Therefore, it is no Ashtavakra preaching to a Janaka; therefore, it is no Yājñavalkya-Gārgī Saṃvāda; therefore, it is not even Nachiketa speaking to Yama! It is something that has an extra edge of intensity and quality to it. Krishna is facing a real-life challenge. Arjuna has to be convinced and converted in real time, right now! “Do it right now. Do it right now, else Duryodhana gets a walkover. Do you want to give that mean chap a walkover? Do you?” Look at the urgency of the situation. That's what makes the Gita special.
And if you can look at Krishna here, you will realise the impossibility of being a real Guru. Krishna is such a glorious example. The real Guru is real because he has to deal with not merely uninterested, but actually sometimes undeserving students. I do not think it would be fair to call Arjuna a deserving student. Krishna is a deserving teacher. But in the sense that Krishna is a deserving teacher, you cannot by way of comparison call Arjuna a deserving student. Arjuna is highly resistant. But then, had he been any less resistant, why would he have been a mere student?
So, the situation of Krishna reflects the situation of every real teacher. You have to pull up the one lying in the dirt and make him fight the highest battle. You don't merely have to polish and shine an already existing ornament in gold. The task of the teacher is to take an ordinary piece of metal, iron or zinc or nickel or copper, and turn it into gold. Ha! That's the difference between a Guru and a groomer. To take an old gold ornament and shine it is called grooming. That's not the task of a Guru. A Guru is like Krishna: take iron and turn it to gold. That's what is happening on the battlefield. Awe-inspiring, poignant, beautiful, breath-taking, real—what's about Bhagavad Gita? It's real!
When I say ‘real’, I do not mean ‘real’ in the literal sense of the word. I do not mean that the entire seven-hundred odd shlokas were narrated on the battlefield or such thing. No, not really in that sense. It is quite possible that Krishna said something to Arjuna on the battlefield, and later on Veda Vyāsa just narrated it in the best possible way in his own words, quite possible. But even if that happened, that doesn't take anything away from the sheer intensity and the grandeur of the happening. An able teacher is convincing a reluctant student mired in sentimentality to not to quit—not to quit and do his Dharmā, do his duty.
At a purely academic or conceptual level, the Ashtavakra Gīta is no inferior to the Bhagavad Gita, not at all. Some people even say that the Ashtavakra Gīta is actually a notch higher than the Bhagavad Gita when it comes to the purity of exposition. That might be the case, but it doesn't matter.
It is the intensity and the audacity in the setting of the Bhagavad Gita that keeps it way above any scripture in terms of its relevance, its significance. It will always remain relevant because all of us are Arjunas caught in their own flesh, in their blood, in their tears, in their emotions, in their past. And being caught, we forget what our Dharmā is. Therefore, Bhagavad Gita is immortal. As long as Arjuna lives within us, we will continue to need Krishna.
Also, see the kind of ways Krishna uses to convince Arjuna. That will tell you about what stops Arjuna and therefore, what is it that all of us need to break free of our Arjuna-ness. Krishna could have just instructed or even ordered Arjuna to fight and Arjuna had sincere regards for Krishna. Chances are he wouldn't have disregarded Krishna’s advice. If Krishna orders point-blank, “Fight!” Arjuna would have probably acquiesced. But instead, Krishna proceeds to narrate all spiritual knowledge to Arjuna. That will tell you what it was that was stopping Arjuna. If to make Arjuna fight knowledge has to be given to Arjuna, then what was it that was preventing Arjuna from fighting? Lack of knowledge, ignorance.
Now you know what stands between you and your duty: ignorance. Now you know why Krishna had to come up with the hundreds of verses when the task could probably have been done by a mere strong order. Because Krishna knew that the thing is not so straightforward. An order would probably get Arjuna to fight, but only in a very half-hearted way—and you cannot defend Dharmā half-heartedly. Therefore, the 18 chapters; therefore, the hundreds of verses.
Krishna very obviously understands that it is the knot of ignorance in Arjuna's mind that is keeping him from doing his duty. Therefore, he attacks that knot in all possible ways: Jñāna Yoga, Karma Yoga, Bhaktī Yoga, Vibhūti Yoga, Aiśvarya Yoga, you name it. And now that we are naming the chapters, that tells us of the depths of Krishna’s love for Arjuna.
Do you understand what it means to convince a person so much? You will not understand that if you have never really tried convincing a reluctant student in your life. Try that. Try and face the overwhelming power of ignorance and then you will realise what Krishna is doing on that battlefield. The power of a student’s ignorance can be awfully overwhelming and Krishna is fighting against that ignorance. Verse after verse, example after example, chapter after chapter, episode after episode he is doing everything in his capacity to not to let Arjuna suffer a tragic end.
Not for nothing is Krishna also called as the greatest friend ever. Otherwise, why would he invest himself so much in convincing Arjuna? The kingdom is not going to go to Krishna, or is it? What stake does Krishna have in all this? If anything, he is going to be later charged with all kinds of accusations. But look at the intensity of his love. Arjuna is saying, “No, no, no, no, no…” and Krishna, with all his might, delivers another lecture. And that lecture would have taken almost everything out of Krishna. And now with eyes full of hope, Krishna looks at Arjuna, “Friend, now, now you agree, right? Right mate? Say yes…” and Arjuna says, “No!” and the inexhaustible energy of Krishna makes him come to the next chapter. And then comes the next sequence of top-class verses and Arjuna is still saying, “No, no, no, no...”
You know, I see that ultimately it is not Krishna’s persuasiveness or erudition that won him the day; ultimately it is Krishna’s love that won Arjuna over.
I see that Arjuna probably didn't get much of what Krishna was trying to say; even till the end he was almost clueless. But one thing Arjuna could sense: “If Krishna is insisting so much, then there must be something in it. Otherwise, why would He spend so much of Himself on me? He has nothing in all this. He will get nothing whether I fight or do not, not in a personal sense, so surely there must be something beyond the personal that He is persuading me for. Alright! I think I must agree.”
Only later on, sometime later in his life would Arjuna have completely realized the depths of what Krishna was trying to tell him. Much later in his life would the total significance of Krishna's words that day on the battlefield have dawned on Arjuna. The total significance is absolute and absolute doesn't come so easily to anybody. It would have taken Arjuna a lot of time, a lot of maturity.

A spiritual man is a really ambitious man || Rajan Chaudhary


Question: Sir, I understand that the work we are doing these days will help us. But, mostly I get the feeling that everyone in Advait has become too ambitious. They say do this, get that done. The office seems so much like a corporate.
Speaker: You do not know ambition; all you know is some petty desires. All that you know is desire for some petty limited sum of money, some possessions, some this and that. Because, ultimately whatever you want is quantifiable, is just a number. Even the highest that you can think of, is just a number.
You do not really know ambition. Ambition in its purest form means Immensity. Ambition in its purest form means desiring only the Highest; desiring right till the end of desire; desiring That which will bring a full stop to the desire. I have repeatedly said that the saint is not a renunciate. He is the most ambitious man, he is desiring the Highest. But you have a stereotype. You think that the spiritual mind must have nothing to do; you think that the spiritual mind has no relationship with the world; you think that the spiritual mind simply does not care what is happening around.
The spiritual mind is deeply deeply ambitious. The worldly man, with all his limited cravings, can never really know the ambition of a saint. The worldly man will keep thinking that the saint does not want anything. The fact is that the saint wants That, which is the only thing worth wanting and gets That. The saint wants the highest and gets the highest. The worldly man wants all the worldly things, and does not get even that much.
That’s the thing about desiring rightly. Desire the highest and you get the highest. And desire anything except the highest, and you won’t even get that. Highest is achievable, the others are never achievable. When you want the highest, then you cannot remain yourself. The highest will not be contained within you. You will have to go. When you want something lowly, then you want only for yourself, because you will remain. What you are wanting is so small that it can be contained in your boundaries, it can be contained in yourself; so all your limited things, you can want for yourself. But the highest you can never want just for yourself. When you want the Highest, it is so big, that it will shatter all your limits, all your boundaries.
It has to spread. And this spreading is called compassion.
What do you think that Buddha had nothing to do? He was more busy than your corporate CEOs. Today if your CEOs fly they will say, “We are flying so much and we are frequent flyers. And we are collecting all the flying miles.” Do you know how much did the Buddha travel? And he was traveling all the time. He died at the age of 78. Even till his last day, he was moving. Can your CEOs match that? And he had raised a huge organization. He was the CEO of that organization. And the organization was running with its rule, with its discipline, with a goal in mind.
It is just that, when you have an organization like that, to be a part of the Buddha’s sangha, you need to first have something of the Buddha within. Otherwise, your laziness and your self-centeredness will make you feel, “Why am I doing all this for others? My reading is alright, but why should I give something to the others?” If your reading is alright, that only means that you are operating from your petty and miserable ego. Had you really attained even a shadow of immensity, you would have immediately wanted to radiate it, to give to others. And if that requires setting up of an organization, a sangha, if that requires having an entire army of Bhikshus , the Buddha will do that. Even if that requires setting up an order, having rules and discipline. Do you know how difficult it was to gain an admission into the Buddha’s sangha? There were clear guidelines, you will have to be an apprentice, and intern for a very long period of time. And you will have to abide by these rules, clear these tests. Only then you can enter. Getting into your corporate is so easy, getting into the Buddha’s sangha was difficult, more difficult.
That is real ambition, when you want to get into the Buddha’s sangha ; that is real ambition. And that is more tough than getting into any of these mainstream corporate companies. From where do you pick all these notions? Do this, do that. Yes, do this, do that and what you are doing is highly insufficient. Do more. Do twenty times, fifty times, a million times more. But you will not be able to do a million times more, again if you are doing it for your little self. You can do it, only when you are not yet obsessed with yourself. If you are all the time licking your own wounds, then how will you give medicines to others? Your entire attention is towards your own wounds, and you are nursing them, caring for them, licking them. How will you ever pay attention to the suffering of others? How will you ever realize that you have a bleeding world in front of you and it needs help?
But to you spirituality probably means your own deliverance. It does not happen that way. You are disappointed and you will keep getting more and more disappointments. There is nothing called individual emancipation. Do you remember we said that you cannot change without allowing your environment to change? And then you said, “Yes Sir, it is true. You cannot change without allowing your environment to change.” Are you blind that you cannot see that the world itself is your environment? Can you be at peace when the world is in turmoil? You easily understand that I cannot change, if I do not change my friend circle. You understand that much, right? Now, extend the whole thing a little, see that the entire world is your environment. Can you escape the world?
When the world is burning, how will you be at peace?
Listener: But Sir, it is the exact opposite of Self-education, that first change yourself and then the world will change.
Speaker: So, change yourself. How will the world change? On its own? When you change, then you become the agent of change. Or does self-education says, “Change yourself and then do nothing to change the world.” Self education says, “Change yourself and the world will change.” Now, connect these two statements, change yourself – first, the world will change – second. How does two follow one?
Listener: One has to change.
Speaker: But you are saying, “No, if we do that then we are being ambitious. If we do that then we are being a corporate.”
Listener: Sir, I am not saying that we shouldn’t do that. But I think, the amount of intensity we are putting in is too much.
Speaker: Yes, Love is intensity. What do you mean by too much? There is nothing like too much. Ambition is only when it is little. When it is too much, then it is not ambition. Then it becomes devotion. When your desire is of the limited, then it is called ambition. When your desire is of the unlimited, when it is too much, then it is called devotion. Do you understand this?
You can be ambitious only about the little, “Let me earn five hundred crores”, which is just a small sum. What is five hundred crores? Nothing. That is ambition. But when you want the ultimate, that is devotion. You are not stopping anywhere. Yes, do this, do that and then do a little more.
I am repeating this, the saint can know the ambition that the worldly mind can never know. Never know. The Bodhisattva ideal in Buddhism says that, “Here is the river of the world and deliverance lies on that shore, the other shore. And I am standing on this shore with the entire world. The boat is available to me. I can cross over anytime. I can get my individual deliverance anytime. But I realize that there is nothing called individual liberation. So I declare that I will be the last one to cross the river. I will not cross the river, till even the last blade of grass has crossed the river. I will stay here with the world, till even the stones are liberated.”
Only petty minds think of receding to the hills, sitting in their nice and comfortable rooms, all by themselves, and saying that I am done. I wanted it for myself, I got and that’s all. If you say that you wanted it for yourself and you got it, and that’s all, then you have not gotten it even for yourself. When you get it for yourself then a thousand ways emerge through which it radiates from you. And when it radiates from you, the ways are mysterious. From a Ramana Maharshi, it radiates even as he sits in his ashram. He didn’t go anywhere, but sitting in his ashram he was helping the entire world. From a Krishnamurti, it radiates as he travels the entire world.
The ways are different but one thing is certain, when you have it, it reaches out to all. And when it reaches out, you yourself cannot became a barrier, you cannot say that so much of intensity is not good. When there is a Sun burning within, obviously there will be an intensity in the light that emanates from you. How can you stop that intensity? Now that the sun is burning within, how can you stop that intensity in your eyes? You are powerless. You cannot help it now.
What you are seeing is just the beginning of ambition. You will see more and more ambition as time passes on. There will be no limits. Advait is not there to talk to these thirty people alone. Or do you think you are somebody special? Do you think that the rest of the world does not deserve to listen to what is being said here? Or do you think that there is some private or reserve about these teachings?
They need to reach everybody and we will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that these reach everybody. Are you getting it?

A Little Fish Story- Learning to Be Thankful
In a quiet river lived many fish—big, strong ones that swam proudly, and small ones that stayed close to the plants. Among them was a tiny fish named Chinu.
Chinu often felt unhappy.
“I wish I were big and strong like the others,” she would sigh. “Then everyone would notice me.”
The bigger fish would glide through the water with confidence, while Chinu quietly followed from behind.
One afternoon, something unexpected happened. A fisherman threw a large net into the river. The big fish didn’t notice it in time. They swam straight into it and got trapped.
Chinu saw the danger and quickly darted toward the thick plants near the riverbed. Because she was small and quick, she slipped easily through the narrow spaces where the net couldn’t reach.
From her hiding place, she watched as the big fish struggled. For the first time, Chinu realized something important—her small size, which she once disliked, had saved her life.
After the fisherman left, the river became calm again. Chinu slowly came out and swam freely in the open water.
“I am small… but I am safe,” she said to herself with a smile.
From that day on, Chinu stopped wishing to be someone else. She understood that everyone has their own strengths, and sometimes what feels like a weakness can be your greatest gift.
Moral: Be thankful for who you are—your uniqueness is your strength.
