Greenland’s harsh climate, remote location, and complex geology present major obstacles to mining its vast deposits of rare earth elements, even as President Donald Trump expresses interest in controlling the Arctic island.

Trump has emphasized the strategic importance of Greenland in reducing China’s dominance over the global rare earth supply. However, experts caution that mining operations in Greenland face significant challenges, including ice-covered terrain, lack of infrastructure, difficult rock formations, and environmental risks.

Companies exploring Greenland’s rare earth deposits remain largely in the early stages, and no profitable extraction methods exist for the island’s eudialyte-bearing rocks. Many industry insiders argue that resources in more accessible regions or existing mines outside China offer a more practical route to boosting U.S. supply.

Despite the hurdles, Trump has framed Greenland as critical to countering Chinese and Russian influence in the Arctic, while U.S. investments in rare earths at home and abroad continue to expand. Analysts warn that Greenland is far from becoming a viable source of these essential minerals.

Iran’s Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani has called for a clear distinction between peaceful protests and violent riots, warning that those who incite clashes and violence will face severe punishment.

Larijani stated that many of the ongoing demonstrations stem from economic hardships and represent legitimate public grievances. Citing Iran’s Supreme Leader, he said such protests are “completely understandable,” adding that ensuring economic stability — particularly in the currency market — is among the people’s rightful demands.

However, Larijani warned that a parallel, destructive movement has emerged, exploiting the protests to carry out violent and criminal acts. He said these actions include arson and killings and have no connection to citizens’ economic concerns.
He also confirmed that numerous law enforcement officers have been injured and some killed during the unrest, while stressing that casualties also include peaceful civilians who were not involved in either protests or clashes.

Yemen’s internationally recognized government announced Saturday that it has recaptured large parts of southern and eastern Yemen from the Southern Transitional Council (STC), following a Saudi-backed military offensive that reclaimed the provinces of Hadramout and al-Mahra.

Rashad al-Alimi, head of the Saudi-supported Presidential Leadership Council, said government forces have regained full control of the two strategic regions, which together account for nearly half of Yemen’s territory and border Saudi Arabia. He added that all military forces would now operate under the command of the Saudi-led coalition.

The announcement came as thousands of demonstrators gathered in the southern port city of Aden, a stronghold of the secessionist STC, to show support for the group. Protesters waved the flag of the former South Yemen and chanted slogans against both the Yemeni government and Saudi Arabia.

The clashes have highlighted growing tensions between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, which Yemeni officials have accused of backing the STC. Al-Alimi said former STC members had been invited to Riyadh for talks on Yemen’s future amid fears of further fragmentation.

Israel has placed its security forces on high alert amid concerns that the United States could intervene in Iran as the country faces its largest anti-government protests in years, according to three Israeli sources familiar with the situation.

U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly warned Iran’s leadership against using force on demonstrators and said Washington stands “ready to help.” The warnings come weeks after Israel and Iran fought a 12-day war in June, during which the United States joined Israel in launching airstrikes on Iranian targets.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed the possibility of U.S. intervention during a phone call on Saturday, according to an Israeli source present for the conversation. A U.S. official confirmed the call but declined to disclose details.

While Israel has not signaled plans to directly intervene in Iran, tensions remain high over Tehran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs. In an interview published Friday, Netanyahu warned Iran would face severe consequences if it attacked Israel, adding that developments inside Iran should be closely watched.

A day after the Venezuelan government promised to free a “significant number” of political prisoners, a local rights group reported that only eight people had been released, representing less than 1% of those detained for political reasons. Families of detainees, including activists, journalists, and political opponents, waited anxiously outside prisons Friday, unsure who would be granted freedom.

The daughter of former police officer Miguel Ibarreto learned during a scheduled visit that her father and other prisoners were unaware that former President Nicolás Maduro had been arrested by U.S. forces over the weekend and taken to New York to face federal drug-trafficking charges. President Donald Trump celebrated the release as a gesture toward “peace,” while opposition leaders welcomed images of reunited families.

Observers note that Venezuela has previously released prisoners as part of political negotiations. Foro Penal, a Caracas-based advocacy group, reported that of the 863 people detained for political reasons, only eight had been freed. Many family members remain hopeful but frustrated, with some waiting entire days outside prisons like Rodeo near Caracas.

The limited releases raise questions about the motivations behind the move, whether it signals a genuine shift in governance under Maduro’s former allies or a symbolic act to appease the U.S. administration. Human rights organizations emphasized that true freedom must be reflected in verifiable actions, not just statements.

President Trump met Friday with leaders of major oil firms at the White House to seek $100 billion in investment to restore Venezuela’s oil industry. The plan aims to tap the country’s vast reserves despite political instability and economic uncertainty.

Trump’s push follows a bold U.S. military action that captured former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and seized multiple tankers carrying Venezuelan oil. The administration claims it now controls sales of millions of barrels previously under sanction and plans to oversee sales globally.

White House advisers said the meeting brought together executives from U.S. and international companies with interests in energy, construction and commodities. Trump posted on social media that major oil firms pledged investments of at least $100 billion.

Officials said the investment strategy also aligns with efforts to keep gasoline prices affordable for Americans, though some companies have held back pending contractual certainty.

Protests continued Friday in Minneapolis over the killing of Renee Good, a local woman shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer during a federal crackdown on immigration. Hundreds marched through freezing rain, chanting “ICE out now!” and holding signs calling for the removal of ICE officers from city streets.

The killing comes as federal immigration officers also shot and wounded two people in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday. Local officials and protesters rejected claims by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, President Donald Trump, and Vice President JD Vance that the Minneapolis shooting was an act of self-defense, describing it as unjustified. Video footage showed the ICE officer firing at the vehicle as Good attempted to drive away.

The Minneapolis operation is part of the largest immigration enforcement effort in U.S. history, involving more than 2,000 officers and over 1,500 arrests. The death of Good is the fifth linked to federal immigration sweeps since Trump took office, and protests have spread or are planned in multiple major U.S. cities.

State authorities in Minnesota have been excluded from the investigation by federal agencies, raising concerns over the fairness and transparency of the inquiry. Governor Tim Walz has demanded state involvement, while the FBI and Justice Department maintain control over the investigation.

U.S. forces boarded another oil tanker in the Caribbean Sea on Friday as part of the Trump administration’s intensified campaign against sanctioned vessels transporting Venezuelan oil, the U.S. military said.

The operation targeted a ship called the Olina, marking the fifth tanker intercepted by U.S. forces in recent weeksThe pre-dawn action was carried out by U.S. Marines and Navy personnel under U.S. Southern Command, which said there is “no safe haven for criminals.” Unclassified footage released on social media showed a U.S. helicopter landing on the vessel and personnel searching its deckThe Coast Guard, under the Department of Homeland Security, took control of the Olina, a vessel previously sanctioned under its former name Minerva M for moving Russian oil.

The ship, flagged in Timor-Leste but listed in shipping registries as flying a false flag, had last transmitted its location in the Caribbean north of Venezuela before going dark.

The Olina has a cargo capacity of roughly 890,000 barrels of oil — worth about $53 million at current prices — and its seizure underscores Washington’s effort to control the global distribution of Venezuelan petroleum products following recent actions against the government of Nicolás Maduro.

Iran signaled Friday that it is preparing a harsh crackdown on nationwide protests, directly challenging U.S. President Donald Trump’s pledge to support peaceful demonstrators as the reported death toll rose to at least 50.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei accused protesters of acting to please the United States and dismissed Trump as having hands “stained with the blood of Iranians.” Iranian state media repeatedly referred to demonstrators as “terrorists,” language often used ahead of violent crackdowns in past unrest.

Iran’s judiciary chief, Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei, vowed that punishments would be “decisive, maximum and without any legal leniency.” Meanwhile, authorities cut off internet and international phone access, making it difficult to assess the full scale of the demonstrations that began over economic hardship and escalated into the most serious challenge to the government in years.

The unrest intensified after former Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi called for coordinated protests, drawing chants against the Islamic Republic and occasional praise for the former monarchy. U.S.-based rights groups say more than 2,270 people have been detained, while Western governments and the European Union condemned violence against protesters.
