Motoring Adventures

We spent the afternoon of July 3rd, boating at Canyon Lake, which is a lake created along the Guadalupe River, the same river that flooded and caused the devastation in Kerrville and Hunt, Texas. Yesterday I went back out there to see if it had risen or changed at all from the flood waters. The first two pictures show the muddy waters making their way into the lake. The third picture was from July 3rd, before all the flooding began. Quite a contrast in color and clarity of the water and it does appear to be on the rise. The lake was actually low from many years of drought. Our hearts and prayers go out to all the victims. A stark reminder that we are always at the mercy of nature.

Being solo in the backcountry is definitely a unique experience. But what I think is even more intriguing is camping alone in remote areas. I've gone camping in the backcountry dozens of times over the past 15 years. But it's only in the past few years that I've been solo camping and that first night I spent in a remote area of Big Bend National Park, alone, was a mentally challenging one and something I did not expect. When I was pre-occupied, I was fine. It's once the sun went down and I finished washing dishes and putting things away that all the "what if's" started to whisper in my head. It probably didn't help that it was winter and the sun had set pretty early. No campfires are allowed at Big Bend and I did not have any sort of propane camp fire to keep my mind pre-occupied. I knew I was totally fine. I had enough food, water, satellite communicator (I even text my wife a couple times) but I did not expect the level of anxiety I began experiencing. I almost had like an instinctive fight or flight response and a part of me just wanted to pack up and drive to somewhere to be near people. It was then that I realized just how dependent we are upon others. Eventually I just went to bed early and eventually fell asleep. In the morning the rising sun had never felt so inviting and comforting. I no longer felt like I was alone. It was a surreal experience and one that I've been chasing ever since.

Another East Texas trip is in the books. I was able to give the newly installed Leitner rack its first official test run and must say I am very happy with it so far!
