Princess Elizabeth World War II #princess #elizabeth #world #war
When World War II broke out in 1939, then Princess Elizabeth was just 13 years old. British officials begged her mother to take Elizabeth and Margaret to Canada for safety, but the queen refused, saying, "The children won't go without me. I won't leave without the king. And the king will never leave." When the Germans began bombing London, however, young Elizabeth and Margaret were sent to Windsor Castle 20 miles outside of the city. From there, the future Queen Elizabeth II made her first official contribution to the war effort by giving an address during BBC's "Children's Hour."
Elizabeth continued to play a part in the war effort however she could as a young teenager. She was photographed working in her Victory Garden at the palace to encourage her countrymen to grow their own vegetables and ease food shortages. On her 16th birthday, Elizabeth performed her first inspection on a military regiment during a parade at Windsor Castle. And as soon as she turned 18 in 1944, she started begging her father to let her join the women's Auxiliary Territorial Service. In 1945, King George VI finally gave in, and the 19-year-old future queen started training as a mechanic for the British armed forces.
