Imagine this.

You’re sitting on the deck of your cabin drawing in the the dirt with a stick. All your friends are gone on a quest but you couldn’t go because you broke your left leg training with Percy. You wait for them to get back bc without them you’re pretty bored, and you’ve been told they will be back soon. All the sudden you hear cheering and clapping and you know your friends are back. You as quickly as you can sit up grad your crutches and try to make your way to the crowd at the front of camp. But something seems off when you realize the campers stoped cheering. Some even started to cry. You knew some thing was wrong so you pushed through the crowd towards annabeth who quickly guides you and your newly returned friends away from the seen. You ask what’s going on but they all stay silent. So you continue to walk back to your cabin and sit back down where you used to be before they arrived. Slowly the silence starts to be depressing. You have so meany questions so you start to ask.
“What happened? Why is everyone sad?”
You look at everyone in the group for answers. But none of them speak. All the sudden Leo stands up. You realize that he has tears in his eyes. You look at the rest of the group. They all do as well. Your palms start to sweat and your voice shakes as you ask again “what happened?” Leo shakes his head and runs away to his cabin. Percy stands up and comes to sit next to you. He stares down at what you had drawn in the dirt before they had came back. And finally speaks.
“Your best friend didn’t make it…”
Your hands begin to tremble and sweat drips from your forehead. You think it’s a joke. But how could it be? Why would they joke about that? It’s not even funny. You think to yourself.
“It’s not funny guys.” You finally say
“And whatever stupid joke you’re trying to pull, I’m not gonna fall for it.”
Nico looks up at you and shakes his head.
“This is no joke…. I’m sorry”
You stand up.
“NO!” You scream
“This can’t be right! Where’s my friend?”
Annabeths voice shakes as she replies
“Gone. I’m sorry, but you need to understand.”
“I DONT!” You holler
Piper stands up to hug you and you let her
She whispers in your ear “I know what it’s like…you can talk to me.”
She speaks louder saying “we all do. Talk to us if you need to.”
You can’t hold back tears. You know this isn’t a stupid joke. This. Is. Real. Even though you desperately wish it wasn’t. One by one your friends stand to hug you. You stand there a while sobbing in the warm embrace of your friends. But the sweat on your back is cold and your legs begin to shake and your knees grow weak. You slowly crouch to the floor and your friends sit there with you. For as long as you could possibly cry you were doing so.
“I’ll see my friend again right?” You finally whisper through sobs.
“Yes. I promise.” Annabeth whispers back.
You aren’t sure how you will ever move on. But you know you have to.
