MiffTrains

Well, August 9-12, MiffTrains is heading to Dekalb, IL including a return to Rochelle Railroad Park. Expect footages of Union Pacific and BNSF Trains along the way and I may potentially stop by Effingham, IL for a train as well on the way.

MEETUP ANNOUNCED: Mifftrains is planning a meetup in Austell, GA Saturday March 23. If successful more meetups will follow.

Facts about Austell, GA

Located not too far from Atlanta, GA, Austell, GA is a railfanning Hotspot on the Atlamta Terminal. The main line there is the ATL North District, which provides 26 trains in a 24 hour period plus Intermodal Transfers and Unit Trains. It's also the East End of the NS East End District, which provides 13 trains in a 24 hour period. Altogether, expect about 39 daily mainline runs to go by Austell in a 24 hour period, making it one of the busiest spots in GA. It's also the origination and termination spots for some Whittaker Yard Intermodal Locals. Feel free to come early but I will be there around 7-8 AM.

Railroad Safety Incident are still common to this day, and recently it happened to a Pastor and his family in Arkansas when they were stuck by a Union Pacific Train (unsure of type or symbol) in Arkadelphia, AR.

First and foremost, sincere thoughts and prayers to him and his family as 2 of his daughters died in the crash and him and his son are in the hospital in critical condition. I could never imagine losing members of loved ones this young. I also send prayers for him and his son's survival.

As much as I was shocked, this was preventable, and that's what this community post is about.

Where they got hit at is a marked crossing with no gate nor lights. When you approach this type of crossing, first of all, DO NOT assume it to be a dead line. I have seen these types of crossings on the busiest lines. 2nd of all, make sure you look both ways (even after a train passes if it's a double track line). In addition, turn your radio volume down and roll your windows down to see if you hear a train horn. Once neither you hear a horn nor see a light or a train, proceed through. For crossings with lights and gates, make sure none of these are activated and gates are not down. And lastly, NEVER ATTEMPT to beat a train and never stop on tracks.

If your vehicle stalls at a crossing, look for the blue sign at the RR Crossing for instructions.

Hope this helps a bit.

UPDATE: Unfortunately I would have to skip tomorrow as my car's oil change is due in a few hundred miles and I'd much rather have that taken care of before the big days Friday and Saturday.
