The Japanese government signed the instrument of surrender on 2 September, effectively ending the war.

The declaration came a month after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie by a Serbian-backed terrorist on June 28, 1914. The declaration also came after news of an exchange of fire between Austrian and Serbian units on the Serbian border.
Austria-Hungary's declaration of war set off a series of military, diplomatic, and political decisions by European leaders that turned a localized conflict into a global war. Within days, other European countries declared war on one another, including Russia, France, and Britain, who stood against Austria and Germany. The result was a devastating war that ended the Austro-Hungarian empire.
