The Statue of Liberty is a powerful symbol and an important part of American culture and history. It’s also known as "Liberty Enlightening the World.”

ORIGIN & SYMBOLISM
The statue was a gift from the people of France to the United States, intended to commemorate the centennial of the American Declaration of Independence and as a symbol of friendship between the two nations. It was designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and its metal framework was built by Gustave Eiffel. The statue represents Libertas, the Roman goddess of liberty, and is a symbol of freedom and of the United States.

CONSTRUCTION & ARCHITECTURE
The statue is made of copper and was constructed in France, then shipped to the United States in crates, and assembled on the completed pedestal on Liberty Island. The internal structure is made of iron and was designed by Gustave Eiffel. The statue's copper skin is attached to the framework with iron bars and has turned green due to oxidation over the years. It has a height of 151 feet (46 meters) from the base to the tip of the torch. With the pedestal and foundation included, it stands at about 305 feet (93 meters).

INSCRIPTION
A famous feature of the Statue of Liberty is the inscription of a sonnet titled "The New Colossus" by Emma Lazarus, which includes the famous lines, "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free..."
