Welcome to Data Product Dojo! In this video, we will be exploring the history of data visualization. We will look at how data visualization has evolved over the years, from its early beginnings to its current use in the modern world. We will also discuss the different techniques and tools used in data visualization. Finally, we will look at how data visualizations are used today and how they can be used to improve decision making. So join us as we take a look at the brief history of data visualization.
FIVE ways to build insights and intelligence on your product/offering!
- Focus Group: A focus group is a consumer research method in which a small group of people, typically five to ten, come together for an interview with the purpose of gathering consumer insight.
- User interviews & surveys - you can observe what people say they do in a survey or interview but there is no substitution for actually seeing how someone does something with their own hands/eyes on it. This allows us to see where they get stuck and stop doing things we thought they would be able to complete which gives valuable insight into missing features or functionality that needs clarification.
- Analytics: Much like user interviews and surveys, data analytics also provide consumer insight when done correctly; however reducing consumer behavior down to numbers isn't always as helpful as expected due to many users behaviors being triggered by emotion rather than logic.
- Surveys: It's important to keep surveys short and simple so they can be easily completed by your target user without too much hassle or confusion.
- Behavioral Observation: Watching users interact with our product provides invaluable consumer insights that we simply cannot get from any other sources; however it also requires more time and effort than interviewing someone on the phone since you will need to take notes while watching them use your product if not doing formal video recording where you can actively watch their reactions and have it for future reference (Obviously with the users explicit permission)
5 Things that you can do to make your meetings more effective
1) Best Meetings are NO-MEETINGS. Avoid meetings whenever possible. Meetings are useful if you have an emergency and want key people to be involved to make quick decisions. The frequency of meetings should fall after the emergency is over!
PRO TIP: Ask yourself, what would happen if this meeting never took place? Is there some tremendous value that people will miss out on?
If the answer is NOTHING/NOT REALLY, then save everyone the horror!!!! PLEASE
2) Goal+Results oriented approach.
-Craft your goals.
-Outline the desired outcomes that you want to obtain by the end of the meeting.
-Write out your goals before the meetings.
-They should be so clear, complete, and specific that someone else could use them to lead your meeting.
3) Critically challenge goals. Ask, "What is an alternative/less expensive(YES! Time is an expense) method to achieve this?"
For example, if you want to distribute information, you may find it more efficient to
E-mail,
Slack
DM
Screenshot share
or visit. Realize that a meeting is a team activity. Save tasks that require a team effort for your meetings.
4) Take control of your time. RESPECT IT (if you dont, No one will!).
If you find yourself in a meeting without an agenda or where you dont add value or get value added, JUST DROP OUT!
5) Focus on the main problem. Avoid unnecessary chit-chat. Although entertaining, these waste time, distract focus, and mislead others. Save the fun for social occasions :)
They are good for dumping your tasks but more often than not leave us with a laundry list.
Creating to-do lists is one of the most common things that we do! But, how many time after creating that list do we think - what are the unnecessary things that can be dropped?
Too many times we equate completion of lists/tasks with productivity and that’s furthest from the truth.
I have seen an increased anxiety in non-completion and the feeling of being behind on a never-ending task list.
Here are 3 ways to manage your to-do list
1. Make a list of the tasks. 2. REDUCE YOUR LIST. Strike off tasks that are not valuable, low ROI and are simply not needed. 3. Try to keep your list to 3-4 important things. 4. Prioritize the remaining tasks. 5. Now start with priority 1 task.
Cant do all of the 5 steps above?
No problem,
All you have to do is just drop one thing of your list
Give it a try – you might be surprised to see your stress reduced!
P.S. Let me know in the comments what you think!!!!!

As a Product Manager, before learning how to work with stakeholders/customers, learn how ✨NOT✨ to work with them:
❌Don't speak in fancy jargon
❌Don't confuse them with multiple projects/requests
❌Don't schedule unnecessary aimless meetings (touch-base, sync-ups)
❌Don't create a volatile relationship
These are my top tips for working with stakeholders:
✅Listen more, Talk less
✅Talk in simple terms & focus on the problem
✅Be a problem solver and NOT a solution in search of a problem
✅Create a relationship based on TRUST and MUTUAL RESPECT.
What would you add to the list? Tell me in the comments!

3 recipes of disaster if you are a Product Manager!
1. You are consistently taking technical decisions that you are not qualified to make undermining recommendations of your engineering team.
2. You are not listening attentive to the true needs of the customers/users of your product.
3. Your product roadmap is dictated by whims of your imagination or appeasement of upper management.
NOTE: Applicable if you are team lead/Manager or any decision-making capacity
