One of my neighbors is a professor of indigenous cultures of the Americas. I asked her, “If the world’s political infrastructure fell apart and we had to rebuild it what do you think would be the best governing structure to start again?” She didn’t hesitate. She said “The Iroquois Confederacy.”
The Iroquois Confederacy also known as the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, was so successful for so long that Ben Franklin introduced most of its concepts into the American Constitution. So, why then did the Iroquois Confederacy last for many hundreds of years while the American Constitution is constantly being amended and changed and now appears to be an outdated ideology at only 250 years old? Why isn’t it working for our American governing structure the way it did with the native cultures? The answer to this is blatantly obvious to me.
In the Iroquois Confederacy the roles between men and women are clear and not just respected, they are critical to survival. In a nutshell this is how it goes.
Men:
~ Manage trade and protect borders between tribes or invading forces
~ Protect their women and children
~ Mentor their young men with honor and respect for nature
~ Provide meat by hunting
Women:
~ Bearing, Raising and teaching the children
~ Coordinating community tasks
~ Gathering, preparation and preservation of food
Each tribe had its own tribal rights, rituals, ceremonies and there was an understanding and respect for diversity. There was no demand or insistence that all tribes share all beliefs and customs.
The Iroquois Confederacy was a matriarchal society in that each family (up to 10 families living together in longhouses) had a clan mother. Each clan mother was empowered to appoint men from her clan into political positions. They were called “Chief”. While in these positions he acted as the personal representative of that clan mother. So, now we see the major difference between the American Constitution and the Iroquois Confederacy. The goal was to have a thriving tribe to carry on for generations and it was the woman’s domain to bear and nurture children for the next generation. The men protected that.
The whole point of life on this earth for all living things is to produce strong, adaptable, healthy offspring to carry on the species. That is the most fundamental bottom line of life. Without it life falls into chaos, self-annihilation and extinction. In the Iroquois Confederacy children and education were in the domain of women and without strong, healthy children there was no clan, no community, no tribe and no life.
When men stopped honoring the fundamental role of women, which began slowly thousands of years ago, humanity became increasingly chaotic and the children have suffered untold atrocities. In my 70 year view it peaked in the 40s and 50s as technologies were becoming more powerful. Men asserted themselves as king of the household and often beat their wives into submission as slaves.
The natural backlash was the “women’s rights” movement. But that alone will not repair the damage done. Now with increasingly powerful technologies, continuing on this path will lead to extinction. Women have proven that they don’t need men to live their independent lives. So, what good can come out of that? And men are left wondering what their life’s purpose is supposed to be now. With this confusion it seems obvious that from a man’s view, his new and misguided goal is to fight for more and more power over everything until there’s nothing left. I call this obsession with unending power ‘toxic masculinity’ and many women have abandoned their natural instincts in order to join the power grab because what else is there? If raising healthy offspring is no longer the purpose of a species then what’s it for?
Women won't allow themselves to continue being disrespected, pushed to the side and abused. The only successful and long-lasting governing structures have been matriarchal and functioned through consensus. First we have to agree on what it is to be human and our first answer is to bear strong, healthy children for generations to come. Sorry men, that IS the fundamental, biological purpose of a woman. A man’s job is to protect that.

Charles Eisenstein - American author and philosopher gifted with a vision of a more beautiful world our hearts know is possible.
I have been following Charles' work for several years now and I am amazed and overjoyed to see his work now being invited into the mainstream and political stratospheres of our culture (much to his surprise!). I have said often that if we don't know what we want then someone else will decide for us. Charles is empowering us to step beyond just a plan. Charles speaks to what we all know is true. We're losing our connection to what it means to be human. So, we are challenged to re-define and re-discover our humanity. We live in a time where anything is becoming possible. Pick a timeline. We can see the potential for revolting against "the enemy" or we can steer the ship toward a new humanity: A More Beautiful World Our Hearts Know is Possible.
