A spiritual aspirant (sādhaka), after progressing through karma yoga, upāsana, and completing vedānta śravaṇam and mananam, no longer depends on the guru or śāstra, having grasped their essence. His focus now is on nididhyāsanam, the continuous contemplation of his true free nature as revealed in vedānta. This involves two types of meditation: sitting meditation, where he deliberately invokes the teaching that ātmā is satya and anātmā is mithyā, and applying vedāntic wisdom during daily transactions. When faced with reactions, worry, or emotions, he ensures that he stays alert to the teachings, preventing rāga-dveṣa from taking over. The goal is to live a life aligned with vedānta, free from contradictory responses. He meditates on ātma as caitanyam (pure consciousness), recognizing it as samvit or the awareness that exists in all beings. This awareness, expressed as “I am,” is sat-cit-ānanda—existence-consciousness-happiness—and any personal attributes are incidental and superficial.
An intelligent person is essentially discriminative, knowing what to change and what to accept. As Pujya Swami Dayananda Saraswati used to highlight a beautiful prayer, “Oh Lord, give me the strength to change what can be changed, the strength to accept what cannot be changed, and the wisdom to know the difference.” Many mistakenly accept changeable situations and struggle against the unchangeable. True wisdom lies in recognizing the world’s unchangeable and ever-changing nature. A discriminative person understands this and remains undisturbed by the body’s and mind’s fluctuations. He appreciates a blooming rose without turning away in philosophical detachment and accepts its fading without complaint. Similarly, he welcomes life’s arrivals and does not resist departures, maintaining equanimity in favorable and unfavorable situations alike. This acceptance brings inner peace and balance, allowing him to navigate life’s impermanence gracefully.
