I'm a software engineer and founder building Clipflow - a project management tool for businesses creating content at scale.

I have a passion for building great software products and promoting a healthy lifestyle.

I exited Realbase, a business I built with my two brothers (and a team of 400 people) in 2022 for $180M. It is a software company that helps real estate agents manage their business more efficiently.

When I'm not building software, you can find me in the gym or outdoors, as fitness is a huge part of my life and something that I'm truly passionate about.

I like to experiment with new technologies but am primarily developing applications in Javascript/Typescript with React and Rails. When building applications that are expected to scale and make money I use Ruby on Rails as the backend paired with a React frontend.

It's impossible for founders to only spend 3 hours on content a week... or so we thought.

It's very easy to get caught in the trap of spending a bunch of time creating content as a founder.

You end up spending your time on:

Ideation.
Researching.
Endlessly scrolling Instagram for "inspiration."
Writing the script.
Actually recording the video.
Editing and finally publishing.

We sat down with ‪@danmartell‬'s team and we asked how much time does Dan personally spend on content each week?

It was a quick and firm answer.

3 hours a week. Max.

This almost seems unbelievable when you realise how much content they make.

If content is a serious pillar in your business - you need to approach it like the top creators do.

You need to build a team around you that can execute on the vision so you can focus on building the business.

I never understood what excess looked like until I married an Italian...

I married in to a very small Italian family.

This Christmas there will be 6 people sitting at the table.

And on the menu there will most likely be...

3 Entrees (Which would match most other families Christmas meals)
5 Mains
4 Choices of Deserts
And more sides than you can throw a stick at.

For someone who spends every other day of the year focused on a calorie controlled diet - Christmas is a very challenging time of year for me...

But I would have it no other way.

This post isn't meant to inspire you or teach you a lesson except...

Enjoy some time with your family. Recharge. And come back ready to go for next year.

If your mum's not running your accounting - are you even running a real business?

This week I spoke with Shane Delaney and his marketing team from Temper Group.

They are the leading Australian supplier of baking goods for baking good baked goods.

(Try saying that 6 times.)

They're a family business and their mum is the Senior Accounting Officer which is the same role my mum had when were building our last business.

Shoutout to the mums keeping the money coming in!

We spent time talking through their current workflow for creating content.

Their biggest pain point was creating content that doesn't get reused and gets lost over time.

They struggle to find what content actually drives conversions.

This is major focus for us as we continue to build ‪@clipflowco‬.

We're always thinking about ways to help businesses create more of the content that works and less of it that doesn't.

P.S - Send help. It feels like I'm slowly moving into the baking niche. I can't workout enough to burn all the calories...

If you're spending all your time writing a word for word script - you're wasting your time.

There's a lot of ways to write a script for your content.

The worst way - dumping a bunch of points into ChatGPT and asking it to write a script for you.

The second worst way - spending a whole bunch of money and time getting someone to write a full script for you to read word by word.

If you write out a full script - you're going to end up sounding like a robot.

Your brain will be constantly fighting you to make sure you stay on track.

You won't be able to inject any personality in.

And it creates really strict guardrails anyone could have read.

The best in the business realised this a long time ago.

Content teams like the one behind Dan Martell instead opt for tightly scripted hooks and segment transitions (think re-hooking viewers) and leave the body as dot points.

This gives the talent a chance to inject their own personality and extra nuggets that full script would miss.

Next time you sit down to create a piece of content - try this approach instead and let me know how it goes.

Does generating 15 million impressions every month with entertainment content actually sell your product?

I got to sit in the meeting between Kinso and Dan Martell's content teams.

Frank ran us through their strategy of using their team as characters for their entertainment content (think The Office).

But they get a lot of hate from people saying this type of content is useless and won't drive sales.

They're spending a lot of cash to create viral content that ultimately won't build their core business.

They're more of a media team than a software company.

But Frank showed us there is method to the madness.

And one of the biggest teams in the world leaned in to hear more about what he had to say.

Their strategy has multiple strengths.

It reduces key man risk. You have multiple characters. People can drop out but the show goes on.

It has grown their waitlist to over 13,000 people before having any product. They've created huge demand.

It gives them reach to connect with people they would typically never have access to.

When Frank asked the Martell team who was the most impressive teams they've met with - the Martell team replied "Kinso is right up there and you guys really understand the why behind content."

I worked all weekend on a feature I never wanted to build. Was it worth it? You tell me.

I've been working hard on to solve some really complex problems for streaming large files efficiently across the planet.

The ‪@clipflowco‬ team have a need to store RAW video files and wanted to replace Google Drive and Dropbox.

The problem with RAW video files is they're extremely large.

For example, ‪@zacharystaines‬ uses 100GB of video files to produce a single YouTube episode.

But being able to download these files in one click is really demanding.

We needed a solution that would not block or degrade performance of the main app while downloading these enormous files on demand.

As difficult as this challenge was I've had two major wins.

I got to solve something really complex which I love doing. It was all consuming and took a lot of time and thinking but I got there in the end.

Having RAW file storage in Clipflow opens up a whole world of opportunity for other features we can explore that will be extremely powerful in the future.

There is no better reward.

I met with the team behind one of the biggest business creators on the planet and to be honest I felt like a third wheel.

This week I got a last minute call from Frank at Kinso telling me to drive up to Sydney to sit in a meeting they were having with Dan Martell's content team.

The issue for me is that I felt like I didn't belong because I don't have the proof of generating millions of views like they do.

As we started talking, I got a bit of insight in to how they generate 200 million impressions and 550,000 new followers every month.

Talk about feeling like an imposter... my channels are only generating hundreds of thousands.

But once they started talking about their operations I was excited to see how everything we learned while building Clipflow applies.

Even if you don't generate the same amount of views - the process to get there remains the same.

Find your top performers, constantly improve, always strive to better and build a team around you that allows you to step away from content and focus on your business.
(I'm going to share key learnings over the next few weeks so stay tuned...)

After building a software business (again) for 694 days, it's been another insane week.

1. Martell Content Team

This week I got a last minute call from Frank Greeff at Kinso AI telling me to drive up to Sydney to sit in a meeting they were having with Dan Martell's content team.

As we started talking, I got a bit of insight in to how they generate 200 million impressions and 550,000 new followers every month.

2. Kinso Strategy

While we were there, Frank Greeff ran us through their strategy of using their team as characters for their entertainment content (think The Office).

3. Out of the Rabbit Hole

I've been working hard to solve some really complex problems for streaming large files efficiently across the planet.

The problem with RAW video files is they're extremely large.

We needed a solution that would not block or degrade performance of the main app while downloading these enormous files on demand.

Everyone dreams of the easy life after finally selling a business but it's a trap.

When I finally finished up with the company that acquired our business, I took some time off.

It was our chance to go on an open ended holiday with no end date.

We traveled up the coast of Australia - living the dream, right?

But it only last a month.

I talk to other founders all the time about the concept of exiting or holding their business.

A lot of them would say to me that they would have no fundamental change to their life if they did get a lump sum of money from an exit.

The problem with exiting is that all tension in your life disappears.

Your rope becomes slack.

The human race thrives on growth.

Without tension, you can not grow.

You need tension in your life to have purpose.

I drove a 2006 Mazda 2 that looked like a toaster until I was 35.

We called her little Nicky.

I bought it from my sister and law and it had a dent in the back where she had reversed into a pole.

The ability to delay gratification is a super power in this day and age. Because the new car will only become old. It's going to get dirty and scratched.

The kids are going to ruin the backseats and it's going to lose the new car smell.

When I was building my business I was embarrassed to drive Little Nicky. But I knew if that I wanted to win I needed to put everything I had in to the business.

You're only going to win if you can find ways to delay gratification.

"She may have struggled go up hills but she was a damn good car." - My Wife.

I hated that piece of crap.

RIP lil' Nicky.
