So what's the first mover's disadvantage, and how to turn this around.

A few weeks ago, on one of the episodes of DigiJanus' #nextBigFin I briefly mentioned that at times there is a first mover's disadvantage.

Here is my own experience with it within the #Fintech space

So let's say you come-up with an amazing and innovative B2C idea for an investment / #wealthmanagement based fintech

(for B2B ideas add another few layers of complexity)

The number one thing you will need to do is go and get a regulatory approval.

The Regulators while promoting innovation, also need to protect
1) The Retail investor
2) The ecosystem from a systematic risk

So now you go back and forth to address these risks and start with a sandbox.

Finally, if/when you exit the sandbox, you will be able to go full throttle.

Now imagine, a second firm ( or a bigger financial institutions) comes with a similar idea, what do you think is going to happen?

Especially when a lot of the regulatory concerns have already been addressed.

I have seen this play out repeatedly in different geographies with regards to Robo advisory, Fractional Assets, Advisory ideas, Cross Border payments, etc.

This is not to discourage you from becoming a First-Mover.

Quite the contrary, it is just to tell you that being a first mover will not be your MOAT for long, so you need to build a 2nd and 3rd MOAT, as well.

Example - in some countries, We went through a sandbox with clients to get fractional portfolios approved for US stocks. (MOAT 1)

But, those clients did not sit back, rather they upgraded systems and processes to manage fractional positions and corporate actions, associated with it. (MOAT 2)

and then these customers went to out to work towards live-trading of fractional securities (MOAT 3) and that is how they continue to build their successive MOATs.

Because they realized that the first-mover's advantage is not in the move, but
1) The learning that comes with it and
2) How you build successive MOATs based on those learnings.

Always happy to hear diverse views, especially if you believe First-Move is still a MOAT in the hashtag#fintech space.

If you are building something in the investment/ Wealth space, I would love to chat with you on how you are building MOAT(s)

NOTE - As always, all views expressed are personal and should not be viewed as coming from any organizations

Completing 3 years of #DigiJanus going live.

No Victory speech today, but 3 things that I learnt the hard way.

Hopefully these will help you in your journey.

1) There will always be skeptics, don't let them hold you back.

When we first launched on the Nasdaq Billboard, lot of people reached out and asked me how did I photoshop the images/ videos so perfectly.

They still do, even though Digijanus has been on the board 3 times.

Earlier I used to respond with an explanation/proof, now with a smile.

Don't try to win over skeptics, your time is better spent with supporters.

2) Every Existential Threat is an opportunity to unlock growth, but only if you are surrounded by people who can be honest with you.

We live in a politically correct world, people are scared to speak their mind, especially when giving feedback.

Around mid of Season 2, just as our views and growth were flatlining. I felt this could be the path to the graveyard

Great feedback came from a very outspoken friend

"the content is great but sometime it is too long and too difficult to get to the right parts."

This was the starting point of #TheLatium which played a pivot role in #digijanus becoming Asia's leading platform for #digitaltransformation content.

So try to have some people, who can speak their mind with you without the fear of repercussions.

3) Play for a bigger cause, as the journey will get very hard.

This year has been rough. I lost loved-ones, couldn't be there for a few others, had a mini-health crisis, and had to deal with a lot of challenges. All with a full time job and a global role.

There were a lot of times when I wanted to quit.

The only reason I could keep going is that I very strongly believe that

"when the right idea meets the right person, magic happens."

and I want Digijanus to be that platform that amplifies the ideas that can expedite the transformation of the financial industry.

I truly believe that Digijanus can deliver magic to the wider community.

and this outrageous goal is the only thing that stopped me from quitting, as I want to see this through.

I do want to thank everyone who has supported us in this journey. There are so many people, can't even tag everyone.

If #digijanus played a positive role in your journey or if you think we can do things differently, please do let me know in the comments or reach out 1-1
