📊 IELTS Task 1: Complete Question Type Guide
Mastering IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 starts with identifying your visual summary type. You have 20 minutes to write 150+ words.
Here are the 7 chart types you need to know:
1. Line Graphs
Focus: Trends over time (e.g., years, months).
Key Vocabulary: Increased, decreased, fluctuated, peaked at, plateaued, plummeted.
2. Bar Charts
Focus: Comparing categories or tracking changes over time.
Key Vocabulary: In comparison, accounted for, higher/lower percentage, significant difference.
3. Pie Charts
Focus: Proportions and percentages of a whole.
Key Vocabulary: Represented, constituted, made up, the majority of, a small fraction.
4. Tables
Focus: Precise data presented in rows and columns.
Key Vocabulary: Highest figure, lowest category, respectively, substantial proportion.
5. Maps
Focus: Urban/geographical changes over two time periods (or two proposed sites).
Key Vocabulary: Constructed, demolished, expanded, replaced, modernized, converted into.
6. Process Diagrams
Focus: How something works or how something is made (natural vs. manufacturing).
Key Vocabulary: Initially, subsequently, following this, at the final stage, transformed.
7. Mixed / Combined Charts
Focus: Two different visuals together (e.g., a pie chart + bar chart).
Key Vocabulary: Relating to, directly linked, highlighting a connection between.
