Sharad Purnima, falling in the month of Ashwin, is a highly auspicious day for worshipping Goddess Lakshmi. This full moon night is especially sacred, and several rituals are performed to invite the blessings of prosperity, good fortune, and peace.
One significant custom is preparing kheer, which is then kept under the moonlight overnight. It is believed that the moonlight on this night has special healing and purifying properties, enhancing the power of the kheer. Consuming this kheer the next day is thought to bring good luck and health.
The rituals start with an early morning bath, followed by cleaning the house, especially the north-east corner, where a red cloth is spread to set up the altar. On this altar, idols or pictures of Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Vishnu, and Chandra Dev are placed. Offerings of rice, Ganga water, incense, a lamp, camphor, flowers, betel nut, and betel leaves are made during the puja.
The idols of Lakshmi and Vishnu are bathed with milk and Ganga water, followed by offering naivedya (food offering), and an aarti. Special mantras are chanted during the puja to invoke prosperity, remove obstacles, and bless the household. After worshipping Chandra Dev by offering water and rice, the prepared kheer is kept in the moonlight and consumed the next day as prasad.
