We passed a significant milestone on our YouTube channel over the weekend and we wanted to take a moment to express our gratitude. While we tend not to focus on metrics like views/likes/subscribers as a source of self-worth or general success, 100,000 subscribers feels like a pretty massive achievement for two guys providing an educational resource focused on drum sounds.
Thank you to the brands that have provided product support. Thank you to the people who have offered up words of encouragement. Thank you to our friends and families who have shown so much love and support. Thank you to the members of our Patreon who make this series possible.
Whether you've been with from the start or just started watching, thank you for being part of this community.
-Ben & Cody

I was saddened to learn that Bob Gatzen passed away this morning after years of battling dementia.
Bob was one of those people with an insatiable curiosity and general need to experiment. He LOVED getting his hands dirty with a project. At the same time, you immediately felt welcome and respected in his presence. I had the privilege of working with him quite a bit during my time at DāAddario. In addition to all of the consulting and design work he did throughout the percussion industry (as well as running his shop, Creative Music, for several decades) he was one of the key individuals behind the so many of the innovations at Evans Drumheads even prior to DāAddario. I'd known about him for years prior to meeting him, thanks to his many drum tuning videos.
We would spend hours on the phone or in person, going through concepts and experimenting with prototypes. Every once in a while Bob would casually tell a short story about a drum clinic or NAMM show from way back and I would find myself stunned that I was on the receiving end. In addition, I learned an incredible amount about drum tuning and the physics of drum sounds from Bob. Every time heād pull out a drum key it was a masterclass and Iād find myself stunned, once again, that I was receiving all of this information from him.
Bob was a huge inspiration for the development of Sounds Like a Drum. Many of the methods and concepts that weāve covered came from information that Bob had imparted upon me. It was always my goal to maintain an open-minded willingness to experiment throughout our series the way that Bob always did.
Thanks for the inspiration, knowledge and friendship, Bob.

Today, amidst the celebration of Black Music Month, we commemorate Juneteenth here in the United States. Progress is often slow and hard-fought and todayās holiday reflects on this reality while recognizing that there is still much work to be done but, together we can make a difference.
If youāre wondering what this has to do with drums, we invite you to take some time to consider the development of music, drumming, and the drum set itself and celebrate the irrefutable impact of black culture on this art form.

Many of you have noticed how the concepts and themes throughout our episodes run deep and far beyond the world of drums or even music. Ideas like maintaining an open and accepting mind are fundamental elements of Sounds Like a Drum. We believe that drums, percussion, and music as a whole are reflections of the people. They are intertwined.
We wish to remind you all of this and express our love, support, and solidarity for all of our LGBTQ+ siblings on this, the first day of Pride Month. This is a reminder of love, inclusion, and empathy. A reminder that we are ALL human beings.

Thank you. Thank you all so much.
Five years ago we started Sounds Like a Drum with the goal of creating a library of tuning resources in the form of a weekly YouTube series.
There are days when I canāt believe weāre still doing it. Where I canāt believe that people still want to watch, and listen, and learn, and laugh, and be inspired. Not by drumming videos full of circus tricks but by a series of videos with the purpose of exploring the sound and feel of drums with an unrivaled amount of passion [read: weāre a couple of serious nerds!].
The biggest thanks of all goes to the members of our Patreon, without whom we wouldnāt be able to continue producing this series. It takes a lot of work to produce these videos consistently on a weekly basis and maintain what weāve built, not to mention continue to grow. The people who have stepped up to support our work mean the world to us.
Thank you all for being part of our community.
