Before you head to the airport, check the real-time TSA wait times. For the last 48 hours, I’ve been monitoring security times at IAH and scouring the web for ways to hack my way through the line quickly.

If your travel plans are flexible, see if you can depart from a nearby airport. From Houston, I was eyeing flights from William P. Hobby Airport (HOU) or even driving to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW).

You should also check with your airline to see whether you’re eligible to change to another flight or what your options are if you miss your flight. United is allowing flight changes for travel dates of March 23 to March 25 (check here for details), and other airlines may have similar policies. Since I’ve cleared security with hours to spare, I’ve put myself on the same-day standby list for a few earlier flights.

🔹Be Ready To Wait the Posted Amount of Time … or Longer

I came prepared with a charging brick, snacks, drinks, and an empty bladder because I fully expected to be stuck in line for hours. The airport advises travelers to use the restroom and buy anything they need before entering the line, since once you’re in it, there’s really no easy way out.

🔹Having TSA PreCheck or CLEAR May Help … or May Not

TSA PreCheck, TSA PreCheck through CLEAR, CLEAR, and CLEAR Concierge are generally touted as winning strategies, but not today at IAH. Having membership in these programs before you get to the airport may give you a leg up on faster lines (or at least help you on your return flight).
