From the mighty roar of rocket engines to extraordinary scientific discoveries about our universe, Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama is enabling the nations exploration of space as it has since 1960.
While the center inspired the "Rocket City" nickname of its hometown, propulsion is only one of the many cutting-edge exploration and research projects going on at Marshall. The center uses its talented team members, extensive experience and state-of-the-art facilities to serve the interests of both science and exploration.
The result? Increased understanding about our universe, ground-breaking scientific discoveries, improvements to life on Earth, and an improved ability to work and live in space.

A novel electromagnetic thruster passed an initial test in a specialized chamber at JPL. With further development, these thrusters could support human missions to the Red Planet!
This lithium-fed magnetoplasmadynamic (MPD) thruster work is led by JPL in collaboration with Princeton University in New Jersey and NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland. It is funded by NASA’s Space Nuclear Propulsion project, based out of NASA Marshall.

🚀 Enjoy these views of the Artemis II launch from cameras affixed to the rocket! On April 1, 2026, the SLS (Space Launch System) rocket lifted off, sending four astronauts on a test flight around the Moon and back aboard their Orion spacecraft. These cameras, developed by engineers at NASA Marshall, are called the Flight Imaging Launch Monitoring Real-time System (FILMRS). They are able to survive some of the harshest environments during launch.

✨ Meet J1023, a transitional millisecond pulsar that flips between quiet and chaos.
Thanks to new observations from #NASAIXPE and other telescopes, scientists found that X-rays from the rare pulsar system do not come from the star itself, but the pulsar wind. This chaotic mix of gases, shock waves, magnetic fields, and particles accelerated near the speed of light interacts with the accretion disk to produce the light we detect.
