Stray Crows: Ronin is a forthcoming tabletop RPG of wandering swordsmen, desperate peasants, scheming lords, restless ghosts and sudden, blood-gushing, messy death, set during Japan’s long transition from the chaos of the Sengoku period into the uneasy order of the Edo era. It is set to go live for crowdfunding soon.

Drawing inspiration from the classic Bushido RPG and the better instincts of the old-school revival, Stray Crows combines serious historical research with quicker, cleaner modern rules - without turning feudal Japan into a sanitised theme park of honourable samurai and cherry blossoms.

The project comprises three complete books covering the core game, magic and monsters, solo play and extensive referee support. Its creator, controversial British game designer James “Grim” Desborough, has spent more than twenty-five years in the RPG industry and has opinions - many of them even printable - about historical gaming, retroclones, samurai fiction, cultural authenticity and why games ought to be allowed sharp edges.

He is available for podcast, forum, website and YouTube interviews to talk about the game, the history behind it, the design process, the influence of Bushido, and the long, occasionally bloody road to publication. Contact via grim@post-mort.com to book.

A couple of people seem to take every health update I do as an opportunity to spit some hate mail my way. If you don't want to watch these updates, then don't. They're not for you.

My conditions are real, diagnosed and often hard to cope with. It is easier for me to make a video to keep my friends, community and fans updated, rather than to have the same depressing conversation dozens of times.

Sometimes I need help, and it has been difficult to ask for help in the past in part due to attitudes like yours. Sometimes I know that talking about my issues has helped other people, and it helps me to talk about it. I don't want to make it my entire personality, but I do like being able to help people.

If my content production is interrupted, it's a good idea to tell people why. Most people are sympathetic or glad to know what's going on.

It's challenging enough dealing with chronic pain, depression, anxiety, dangerously high blood pressure and drug side effects without having a handful of deluded, hateful wankers taking every opportunity to kick me while I'm down to mask their own insecurities and the impending implosion of their political project.

I hate that you can't talk about anything, on any subject, without people assuming you're being disingenuous or holding the worst version of that position that is possible. I talk about my issues because it helps me, helps others, and it's easier to communicate from a central point.

If you don't like me, think I'm grifting or whatever else, just stroll on and do something else.

Continuing in the vein of electrocuting myself, I messed up my medication last night and barely slept. As a result, I feel like re-fried arse. I shall report back on the Stray Crows playtest tomorrow, but no video today. It has been a stressful time at Stately Grim Manor, what with health issues, electrocution, forgetting to take my medicine, friends in need and assorted enshittification, but we soldier on.

You may have heard in my voice that I was in a lot of pain yesterday. I followed that up by electrocuting myself (twice) on a faulty light-fitting in the evening, and I still feel a bit 'peaky'. While I wait to see if I develop superpowers, you'll have to go a day without a video.
