Week 6 of 20 months in Asia recap 🏙️ 😷🩴

Kuala Lumpur, we missed you!! But the pollution was SO bad that we had to stay indoors most of the time (not a biggy for us, as The Traveller Ark Hotel had a lovely communal area, and the apartment we stayed in afterward had a 10/10 view yay).

And when we went out filming, we still had the best time!! We ate our way through the city on the best-rated food tour in KL, met the street artist Ekamil in Chinatown and left our tag on a… barrier? 😆

We visited some old fave spots & some new ones (in a city like KL, no matter how much time you spend there, there’s always something cool and new popping up!) and Ryan finally got his Jesus sandals 🩴

We even did our very first YouTube Live and got 40+ people joining it! It was sooo much fun, and we can’t wait to do another one! We caught up with some videos, and now we’re off to the mountains!!

Our future is still a bit uncertain due to flooding on Pangkor Island tho, but let’s see... Surely we’ll have an adventure!! 🤠

Week 5 of 20 months in Asia recap 🌈 🏝️

Our time in Melaka (aka the most European city in South East Asia) flew by! We came to love this city, despite the super mega pollution happening because of the fires in Indonesia. We actually had soooo many Reels to edit for Instagram, so we spent most of our days behind our laptops, whether in a laundromat or a coffee shop! 💻

Of course, we filmed a vlog in Melaka, and that day we went out to write postcards, take a mochi class & personalise our noodle pot, which we then ate for lunch. The best part was the weekend street food market. Ryan & I love those! 🥹 We can spend the whole evening going back and forth along the stall-filled street!

We stopped for a drink after filling our bellies at the market and befriended a French couple, with whom we ended up having way too many tequila shots offered by the bar 🥃 (first hangover of the series lol).

Our community recommended we visit an island right off the coast, apparently the most mysterious in Asia, so we did!! It’s called Pulau Besar (aka Big Island), and it’s well known among locals for its folklore, religious sites and... black magic!! 😱 We'll have a video from here going up on YouTube in a few days!

Not only were there no tourists, but there weren’t many local visitors either. We mostly found ourselves alone on these crazy beaches, and we even explored a resort built and abandoned in the ’90s. It was surreal!

I have to say, it was difficult to leave Melaka. We were starting to get cozy, but hey, the show must go on, and now we’re off to THE big city!! See you soon, Kuala Lumpur!!! 🏙️

💥 QUICK UPDATE 💥

You may or may not have noticed, but today is posting day... and there isn't a video 😭

This is because our next video is a BEHEMOTH! It's a Malaysian Odyssey where we travel to 3 places on the southwest coast that western tourists literally never go to.

We didn't expect a lot from these towns and villages, and we thought we would end up doing a couple of quick things in each place and produce a 20ish minute video. Oh how we were wrong 😑 - sooo much happened, we met so many great people and visited so many unique spots haha!

Anyway, it's a great video, but it's 45 minutes long. This is far too long for me to edit at our usual 3 day pace, so we are gonna post this beautiful adventure tomorrow instead, sorry for the delay!

In other news, thank you to anybody who joined our first ever livestream today! 🎉

We actually had way more fun that expected. In fact, I think we'll try to plan at least one live stream a month going forward. So keep and eye out!

For those who didn't join, we've decided to continue with our planned route through Malaysia, minus Borneo, to keep the southeast Asia land route theme we've been keen to do for a while!

So, after the new video tomorrow, you can expect roughly 15 more Malaysia vlogs, some in popular spots and other in places you've never heard of, before we cross the sea border into Thailand (yes... the sea border 😂)

We’re making a big decision 😬

So we’ve always had a rough idea of what the first 6 months of our route around Asia will look like - nothing set in stone but a rough plan.

But we might be about to change that… but we’re not sure whether to or not!

Right now the air pollution in Malaysia is hovering around terrible and catastrophic because of the fires in Indonesia, and we’re not sure how much longer we can tolerate it.

With that in mind, Sara and I through it would be a fun exercise to weigh up the pros and cons and go through this decision making process on a YouTube Live!

We want to invite you guys to join us, live on our channel, this Sunday 11th at 5pm Malaysia time (find worldwide times below), to watch the cogs turn in our brains as we make this decision.

Our hope is that you guys will have some vital input into the outcome of our brainstorm too, so we’d love for you to be there in the chat!

Our road trip along the southwest coast of Malaysia is coming to an end! 🇲🇾

Over the past 2 weeks, we’ve been to:

- The southernmost point of mainland Asia
- Pontian
- Batu Pahat
- Parit Jawa
- Muar
- Pulau Besar
- & Melaka

We’ve seen so many incredible places and set foot in towns and villages where no backpacker dares to tread!

And it paid off, because we’ve made fantastic memories and met so many kind and wonderful people along the way ❤️

Next up is a short journey from Melaka to Kuala Lumpur via Port Dickson and Seremban to film some more videos!

Once we reach KL, we’re gonna rest up a bit, edit all the videos we’ve filmed, and make a strategic decision on whether we head to Sabah or not - totally dependent on the air quality situation as we want blue skies and sun to get the full gatorade-water experience!

Oooo we also hit a new milestone on the channel - 15,000 subscribers! We’re so lucky to have you all coming along with us for this adventure 🥰

We wanted to share a HUGE thank you to all the love so far on our Asia series! 🥰🤯

Honestly when we had the idea to quit our jobs and dive into YouTube full-time, we thought it would take 6 months or so before we saw any real traction with our Asia videos. We were fully prepared to get 5000 views a video for aagessss!

But you guys have proven us massively wrong, and we are so grateful for that!

It’s crazy that we’re only 4 vlogs in out of 200 and we’ve got over 1000 new friends who have decided to join us on this journey with us 💃🕺

Due to a technical issue with the upload, our new video says it’s been up for 10 hours… when actually it’s been 10 mins 🙄

So it’s probably not going to show chronologically on your subscription feed, and this will likely impact the overall performance of the video.

It would be a HUGE help to us if you could still find the video and watch it! That way it should still get pushed out!

And we’d love you a whole bunch too ❤️

We just spent 10 days in Johor Bahru in southern Malaysia and here’s our take:

JB is a really cool city with some fun things to do! We took a tour around Kota Jail (pic 1), explored the Heritage Street and even tried a child birth simulator 🤣

But JB is not a big city, and 10 days here is waaayyy too long. At best, we’d recommend 2 days at most.

The only other city we’ve spent this much time in Malaysia is Kuala Lumpur, and in all honesty, JB lacks a lot of the energy and action that we love about KL.

Either way, we fully recommend stopping in JB if you’re backpacking Southeast Asia - especially as we could count the amount of Western tourists we saw during those 10 days on one hand! It’s definitely off of the regular backpacker route 😅

AND we never had a bad meal… as you can see a lot of the pictures below are of food 😂

Anyway it’s finally time for us to move on to the next destination and we’re soooo excited!

WE ARE SO EXCITED!! 🤪🤪

In just a couple of hours our first vlog from our 20-month backpacking Asia series drops!

This is probably the most personal video we’ve ever filmed, taking you guys deep into our lives when we’re back visiting family.

From meeting our newest niece for the first time, shopping for backpacks with Sara’s mum, reminiscing next to a beautiful Swiss lake and getting slightly drunk with Sara’s fam… obvs 😂🥂

Then finishing with a look into how we prep and pack for such a long trip: what we’re taking, what we’re leaving behind, and how we fit all of our lives for the next 20 months into just a 60/70L backpack!

Sara and I are so excited to share this adventure with you, and we are so grateful if you’ve watched even just one of our videos before. Your support is what makes this possible, and we couldn’t think of a life any better suited for us than travelling the world and creating videos to share with our community’s entertainment 🥰

WE ARE NOW FULL-TIME YOUTUBERS 🤯

And we are ready to deliver.
