CTRD - UPSC

Dear subscribers,
Over the years i have tried to understand the pain points of students. One of the most widespread problem that i have been told in this journey is the problem of revision. When the subject is new it remains interesting however, once it is read complete it loses the charm and becomes boring for every subsequent reading. We have tried to solve the problem through a different approach. The book is available on amazon, flipkart, and notionpress. The Revision Book amzn.in/d/0bGTYU3M

DEPRESSION IS A PRIVILEGE, BUT IS IT?

We waste our days thinking how miserable life has suddenly become for us. We sit down and do nothing but contemplate all day. Sometimes we choose to just scroll endlessly on social media and hope that the thoughts which are coming in our brain will subside.

Sometimes we are victims and at other times we feel like a victim. Victim of circumstances and fate when “we feel powerless”. Victim of our habits, victim of our thought patterns, victim of our solitude and reserved nature, victim of our outspoken self when “we are powerless”.

Sometimes I think it is easier to fight fate but more difficult to fight your own mind. You can reject me on that, what do I know!
But my belief comes from the ability you have to fight against circumstances when you are sane and your inability to fight even the simplest temptations when you are addicted.

Why can’t a simple awareness about the fact that something will harm you down the line, is not enough for you to not engage in it? Why do we show compulsions and helplessness against our own better judgement?

Is it because we are weak from inside? That is true indeed. But then what will strengthen us, if not our own awareness?

I say sometimes it is, a lack of options and a sense of purpose. Either of them alone would not be enough.

Lack of options without a sense of purpose will only make a person in desperation, a beggar. Because his stomach will remain the only need he needs to fulfill and that can be catered to easily by begging. 1 out of 100 will definitely give 10 rupees which can get you a pack of biscuits. He will purely operate on survival instincts and not an effort more would be put into something that is not basic.

If he will hoard something, he will hoard money, food, clothes, plastic, metal. To save him from rain, to help him cut, to help him stay warm and to help him carry his hoard with him. Anything excess would be a burden and useless. I have not seen beggars moving with anything more than a pushcart with few belongings and I am not talking about professional beggars but circumstantial beggars. They stay light because without a sense of purpose there is very little use of things to them anymore.

But what if you add a sense of purpose with lack of options. What does that combination create?

Grit, resolve, thoughtless and inhibitions free hard work. A person who would do any work if he knows it will get him money or something that fulfills his purpose. This is what makes people climb down in manholes full of excreta. This is what makes a person clean the trash, work in slaughter houses. Lift sometimes hundreds of LPG cylinders a day, walk 14 km a day on foot for a salary of 7000 rs, compete against the rash traffic on his bicycle to deliver stuff under 20 mins. Women, a lot of them come in this same category. This is no exclusive domain. Perhaps it creates the only place where they both can be equated and respected if someone wants to.

I have seen such people. I know such people. I have seen Madu ram ji. I have seen Maa Kamla and more. Perhaps, you will never meet them but you will see many like them all around you.

For now I leave you with this mountain of a man. I don’t know him, but my heart goes out to him and that is what makes me think that sitting on your ass and doing nothing, feeling depressed is a privilege. I may be wrong, but am I?
