Unfortunately, I have to report on another hazing incident gone terribly wrong...

"Four fraternity members at San Diego State University are facing felony charges in connection with a skit performed at a party last year during which a pledge was set on fire, causing third-degree burns that covered over 16 percent of his body, prosecutors said.

Caden Cooper, 22; Lucas Cowling, 20; Christopher Serrano, 20; and Lars Larsen, 19 were all charged with at least one felony Monday in San Diego Superior Court. All pleaded not guilty.

The four included active members and pledges of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. The fraternity did not immediately respond to an email from the Associated Press requesting to speak to them. A voicemail was left with attorney Michael Malowney, who is representing Cooper, asking for comment. A similar message was also left with the office of Jay Temple, who is representing Cowling. Serrano and Larsen are being represented by unnamed public defenders.

Over the years, SDSU fraternities have had several problems that have prompted investigations, and at least a half a dozen have been put on probation over the past two years, according to the university’s website. In 2020, the university investigated allegations whether a frat leader promoted blackout drinking. It came a year after the death of a freshman who fell out of a bunk bed and cracked his skull after a night of drinking with his fraternity.

The fraternity was already on probation by the university for violating its policies on alcohol and hazing when its members planned a large party at the fraternity house Feb. 17, 2024, that involved a skit in which Serrano would set Larsen on fire, according to the San Diego County District Attorney’s office.

Cowling, Serrano and Larsen planned the skit, during which Serrano would set Larsen on fire, prosecutors said. Larsen spent weeks in the hospital for treatment of third-degree burns, mostly to his legs.

Afterwards, prosecutors said Larsen, Cooper, and Cowling lied to law enforcement officers investigating the incident and deleted evidence on social media, and instructed other fraternity members to delete evidence and not talk to anyone about it, prosecutors said.

The charges include recklessly causing a fire with great bodily injury, conspiracy to commit an act injurious to the public, and violating the social host ordinance. If convicted of all the charges, the defendants could face up to seven years, two months in prison.

At the time of the incident, Cooper was the fraternity’s president, Cowling was on the Pledge Board, and Serrano and Larsen were pledges, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said Larsen and Serrano, who were not of legal drinking age, also consumed alcohol before the skit in Cowling’s presence.

The four were released from jail, but they were ordered to not to participate in any fraternity parties, recruitment events for the fraternity, and to adhere to alcohol laws. They were also ordered to return to court March 18 to prepare for a preliminary hearing set for April 16."

It’s sad anybody can’t afford bus fare, especially when there COULD BE no fare at all on a PUBLIC transportation provider. Regardless, I hope the shooters get caught and punished accordingly. That bus driver mattered too.

Police in Ohio open investigation after 3 women's bodies are found...

Authorities in Ohio launched a homicide investigation after the bodies of three women were found Saturday inside a home in Columbus.

Officers were called to a home on the city's south side just before 4 p.m. Saturday for what a 911 caller described as a medical event. Police found three women who were pronounced dead at the scene, according to police spokesman Sgt. James Fuqua.

He said the killings were considered homicides, but he did not have further details, including what led up to the killings.

In an update released on Sunday, police said that all three women had been shot and killed, CBS affiliate WBNS-TV reported. The identities of the women have not yet been released.

"Unfortunately, this is a very complex scene with the amount of victims that we have," he told reporters Saturday. "It's going to take a little bit longer to make sure that we're very careful in going through the scene meticulously so we do not miss any key piece of evidence."

He said investigators were interviewing witnesses and looking for video evidence.

Fuqua said Saturday that no suspects had been taken into custody.

"This time of year — anytime of the year it's unfortunate when someone loses their life, but particularly this time of the year during the holidays it's going to be very difficult for these victims' families to come to the grips that these family members will no longer be in their lives," Fuqua said.

WBNS-TV reported the incident marked the second fatal shooting in the city's south side within a week. On Tuesday, 45-year-old Darrell Hambrick was found suffering from a gunshot wound inside a nearby home and died at a hospital a day later. A man was arrested Saturday in connection to his death.

Columbus police declined to say whether the two homicide investigations are connected, the station reported.

Millions of dollars were stolen from safe deposit boxes in Japan...

TOKYO (AP) — Japan’s biggest bank apologized Monday for the alleged theft by an employee of more than 1 billion yen ($6.6 million) from customers’ safe deposit boxes.

The bank, formally known as Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Inc., said Monday that it was investigating and that verified thefts from about 20 of the 60 clients thought to have been affected amounted to 300 million yen (nearly $2 million). Compensation was being worked out, it said.

The thefts occurred at two Tokyo branches of the bank, from April 2020 until the end of October this year, when the problem was discovered.

MUFG’s president and CEO Junichi Hanzawa told reporters the female employee responsible for managing the safe deposit boxes and their keys is suspected of taking advantage of that position to steal cash and other valuables.

“The case has undermined the customers’ trust and confidence and shaken the very foundation of our banking business,” Hanzawa said. He apologized for causing concern and trouble to MUFG clients.

MUFG said the employee admitted taking the money and using it for investments and her personal purposes. She was fired and was cooperating with the bank’s internal probe and a police investigation but has not yet been arrested.

After news of the thefts surfaced, dozens more people came forward with claims of suspected losses that the bank is working to verify, it said.

The MUFG case is the second recent one involving criminal activity at a major Japanese financial institution. In November, Nomura Holdings acknowledged that a former employee had been arrested on suspicion of robbery, attempted murder and arson targeting a client in Hiroshima.

Asked about the MUFG thefts, the chief government spokesman said Monday that banking operations require high levels of trust and a sense of public service.

The case was “extremely regrettable,” said Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi.
