In 2020, researchers at Tokyo Metropolitan University discovered a potential method to erase traumatic long-term memories (LTM) in Drosophila flies, offering insights into treating trauma-related disorders like PTSD without brain damage.
The study revealed that environmental light influences LTM retention. When flies were kept in darkness for two or more days, they lost traumatic memories, unlike those on a normal day-night cycle.
This effect was linked to a molecular mechanism involving the Pigment-dispersing factor (Pdf) protein, which responds to light and regulates the cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) in the brainβs memory center, the mushroom bodies.
Without light, Pdf release is inhibited, preventing CREB production and disrupting LTM retention. The findings suggest that traumatic memories, typically hard to erase, can be manipulated through environmental factors.
While the study was conducted on flies, it opens avenues for developing non-invasive treatments for humans, potentially targeting specific neural pathways to alleviate traumatic memories without affecting other cognitive functions.
Further research is needed to translate these findings to human applications, but this discovery marks a significant step toward understanding memory manipulation.
