Part 29 — The Great Goose Incident and Mihirimah Hatun’s First Steps

Spring settled comfortably over the Valley of Two Houses.

The orchards bloomed beautifully, markets bustled with activity, and the streams flowed clear beneath the warming sun.

Life was peaceful.

Which, unfortunately, usually meant that Mehmed Bey was about to create excitement.

One morning, Halime stepped into the courtyard and immediately noticed something unusual.

Mehmed was hiding behind a barrel.

Carefully.

Strategically.

Suspiciously.

“Dursun.”

“Yes?”

“Your son is hiding again.”

Dursun looked toward the barrel.

“He certainly is.”

“Should we be concerned?”

“Probably.”

They approached together.

“Mehmed?”

A small face appeared from behind the barrel.

“Quiet.”

Immediately both parents became curious.

“Why?”

Mehmed pointed dramatically across the courtyard.

Standing proudly beside a water trough was a goose.

The same goose.

Or at least Mehmed believed it was the same goose.

The bird stared back with complete confidence.

The battle lines had been drawn.

The Plan

Unfortunately, Mehmed had a plan.

This was rarely encouraging.

“What are you doing?”

Halime asked.

“I am watching.”

“The goose?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Mehmed lowered his voice.

“It knows.”

Dursun immediately turned away.

Not because he was worried.

Because he was trying not to laugh.

The Great Chase

Everything remained peaceful.

For approximately fifteen minutes.

Then the goose noticed Mehmed.

Mehmed noticed the goose noticing him.

The goose took one step forward.

Mehmed took one step backward.

The goose took another step.

Mehmed ran.

The goose followed.

The chase crossed half the courtyard.

Workers stopped to watch.

Visitors stopped to watch.

Even several guards stopped to watch.

By the time Dursun finally rescued his son, half the valley was laughing.

Mehmed, however, remained deeply offended.

“The goose started it.”

Naturally.

Mihirimah’s Determination

Meanwhile, little Mihirimah Hatun was becoming increasingly active.

Unlike Mehmed, who had been adventurous from the beginning, Mihirimah approached the world differently.

She observed first.

Then decided.

Then acted.

One afternoon she stood beside a low bench in the orchard.

Carefully holding onto it.

Studying it.

Studying the grass.

Studying the distance.

Apparently calculating something.

Nearby sat Halime, Dursun, Fatma Hatun, Bala Hatun, Malhun Hatun and Seda Hatun.

All watching.

Very quietly.

Nobody wished to interrupt.

The First Step

Mihirimah shifted her weight.

One hand loosened.

Then the other.

For a brief moment she stood entirely on her own.

The adults immediately stopped breathing.

One step.

Then another.

Then a third.

And finally:

She stumbled forward.

Directly into Halime’s waiting arms.

The orchard erupted with cheers.

Mihirimah blinked.

Apparently surprised by everyone’s excitement.

Halime laughed joyfully and kissed her daughter’s forehead.

“You did it.”

Nearby, Dursun looked unbelievably proud.

Again.

“She walked.”

Seda Hatun smiled.

“Three steps.”

“She walked.”

Bala Hatun laughed.

“He said exactly the same thing when Mehmed walked.”

Dursun remained entirely unapologetic.

“Because she walked.”

A Family Evening

That evening, the entire family gathered for supper beneath lantern-lit trees.

Mihirimah sat happily in Halime’s lap.

Mehmed was busy explaining the goose incident.

Repeatedly.

To anyone willing to listen.

His version became increasingly dramatic with each telling.

By sunset, the goose had apparently grown to the size of a horse.

Fatma Hatun nearly fell from her chair laughing.

Even Osman Bey and Yahşi Bey struggled to maintain serious expressions.

After Everyone Left

Late that night, after the guests had departed and the children were asleep, Dursun and Halime returned to their favorite place beneath the orchard trees.

The moonlight filtered softly through the branches.

The valley was quiet.

Peaceful.

For a while they sat together without speaking.

Then Halime smiled.

“ Mihirimah walked today.”

Dursun nodded.

“She did.”

“And Mehmed survived the goose.”

“By Allah’s mercy.”

That made her laugh.

The years seemed to pass so quickly.

One moment they had been newly married.

The next, they were watching their children grow before their eyes.

After a thoughtful silence, Dursun looked toward the stars.

Then toward Halime.

Then back toward the orchard where their children slept safely.

“Do you ever wish time would slow down?”

His voice was quiet.

Halime understood immediately.

The children.

The memories.

The passing years.

All of it.

She gently took his hand.

“Sometimes.”

The answer was honest.

Then she smiled.

“But if it slowed down too much…”

Dursun looked at her curiously.

“We would miss the next adventure.”

A smile appeared on his face.

“You have a point.”

Together they sat beneath the spring blossoms and moonlight, grateful for the blessings Allah had granted them.

Part 28 — Mihirimah Hatun’s First Spring and a Secret Gift from Dursun

Winter gradually loosened its hold on the Valley of Two Houses.

Snow melted from the hillsides, streams flowed freely once more, and the orchards awakened with blossoms of white and pink.

For little Mihirimah Hatun, it was her first spring.

For Mehmed Bey, it was another opportunity to create trouble.

And for Dursun Bey, it was a season that brought back many memories.

Mihirimah’s Admirer

Mihirimah was only a few months old, yet she had already managed to capture the hearts of nearly everyone around her.

Especially her father.

One morning, Halime entered the orchard and found Dursun sitting beneath an apple tree with Mihirimah asleep in his arms.

The reports he was supposed to be reading sat untouched beside him.

“Dursun Bey.”

He looked up innocently.

“Yes?”

“You have not read a single page.”

“I was busy.”

Halime looked at the sleeping baby.

“Very busy.”

“I am performing important duties.”

“What duties?”

Dursun looked down at Mihirimah

“Being admired.”

Halime laughed so hard she nearly dropped the basket she was carrying.

Mehmed’s New Problem

Meanwhile, Mehmed had discovered a difficulty.

Everyone wanted to hold Mihirimah .

Everyone.

Bala Hatun.

Malhun Hatun.

Seda Hatun.

Osman Bey.

Yahşi Bey.

Fatma Hatun.

Even visiting relatives.

One afternoon, Mehmed folded his arms dramatically.

“It is unfair.”

Halime raised an eyebrow.

“What is unfair?”

“Everyone holds Mihirimah.”

“And?”

“They used to hold me.”

The room immediately erupted with laughter.

A few moments later, Bala Hatun solved the problem by pulling Mehmed into a hug.

The crisis was successfully resolved.

Dursun’s Secret Project

For several weeks, Dursun had been disappearing whenever he found spare time.

At first, Halime assumed it involved valley matters.

Then she noticed something unusual.

Whenever she asked where he had been, he became suspiciously vague.

“Working.”

“On what?”

“A thing.”

“A thing?”

“An important thing.”

That answer only increased her curiosity.

The Anniversary

Several days later, Dursun approached her after the evening meal.

“Come with me.”

Immediately Halime became suspicious.

“Why?”

“You shall see.”

“That answer never ends well.”

“It will this time.”

Eventually she agreed.

The two rode together through the valley as the sun began to set.

The route seemed familiar.

Very familiar.

Then realization dawned.

“Dursun…”

He smiled.

“Yes?”

“You did not.”

“I did.”

The Spring

Before them stood a beautiful spring nestled among trees.

Not the original spring near İnegöl.

But one carefully chosen because it resembled it.

The area surrounding it had been transformed.

Wildflowers had been planted.

Stone benches added.

Shade trees nurtured.

A small resting place created for travelers.

The spring was peaceful.

Beautiful.

For a moment, Halime was speechless.

“You built this?”

Dursun nodded.

“Over several months.”

She looked around in amazement.

“Why?”

For a moment he simply smiled.

Then answered honestly.

“Because I wanted to remember where everything began.”

The evening breeze stirred the blossoms overhead.

The water flowed gently beside them.

And suddenly Halime understood.

This was not merely a spring.

It was a memory.

A tribute.

A reminder.

To a chance meeting that had changed both their lives forever.

A Gift

Near one of the benches stood a small carved wooden plaque.

Simple.

Elegant.

Halime approached it.

Upon it were carved words:

“Every blessing has a beginning.”

For several moments she simply stared.

The meaning was obvious.

The spring.

Their meeting.

Their friendship.

Their marriage.

Their children.

Their family.

All of it had begun with a single moment.

A single meeting.

When she turned back toward Dursun, her eyes were shining.

“You remembered all of this?”

Dursun laughed softly.

“Halime Hatun.”

“Yes?”

“I remember everything.”

The answer warmed her heart more than the spring sunlight ever could.

Sunset by the Water

Together they sat beside the spring as the sun slowly disappeared beyond the hills.

For a while neither spoke.

The silence was peaceful.

Comfortable.

Then Halime rested her head lightly against his shoulder.

“Thank you.”

Dursun smiled.

“You like it?”

“I love it.”

For a moment, neither moved.

The sound of flowing water filled the air.

Birds sang in the distance.

The sky glowed gold and crimson.

And for a little while, they were no longer leaders of a valley.

No longer parents.

No longer burdened by responsibilities.

Just Dursun and Halime.

The young man who had tried to help a stranger at a spring.

And the young woman who had unknowingly changed his life.

And grateful for all the moments still to come.
