The Passage Unlocked with Jim Murrell
Many are excited to have “the first American Pope”. The truth is the Bible NEVER authorizes a pope in the first place. Jesus built his church and will forever be the head of it himself. He does not need a middle man.
1. Jesus Christ Alone Is the Head of the Church
• Ephesians 1:22–23 (NKJV)
“And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body…”
— Christ is the supreme authority.
• Colossians 1:18
“And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.”
— No room for a co-head; Christ alone has preeminence.
⸻
2. Christ’s Authority Is Final and Everlasting
• Matthew 28:18
“All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.”
— If Christ has all authority, there is none left to be given exclusively to a pope.
• Hebrews 1:1–2
“God… has in these last days spoken to us by His Son…”
— God’s full revelation and authority are found in Jesus, not a human intermediary.
⸻
3. The Church Has No Earthly Head or Universal Human Leader
• 1 Timothy 2:5
“For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus…”
— The pope is often called a mediator or vicar of Christ. Scripture allows no such role for man.
• Matthew 23:8–10
“Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven. And do not be called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ.”
— Jesus clearly forbids the use of spiritual titles like “Holy Father” for religious leaders.
⸻
4. Peter Was Not the First Pope (Misuse of Matthew 16:18)
• Matthew 16:18–19 is often cited as the foundation of papal authority. But:
• The “rock” in context is Peter’s confession, not Peter himself.
• In 1 Peter 2:4–8, Peter himself identifies Christ as the chief cornerstone.
• Just two verses later (Matthew 16:23), Jesus rebukes Peter as “Satan,” showing Peter was fallible.
⸻
5. Church Leadership Was Plural and Local, Not Universal and Singular
• Acts 14:23, Titus 1:5, Philippians 1:1 – Each congregation had multiple elders (bishops).
• 1 Peter 5:1–4 – Peter refers to himself as a “fellow elder,” not a supreme head.
• No New Testament pattern ever establishes a centralized, one-man office over the global church.
⸻
6. Infallibility Belongs to God Alone
• Romans 3:4
“Let God be true but every man a liar.”
— No man can claim infallibility; only God’s Word is flawless (Psalm 119:160).

The Passage Unlocked with Jim Murrell
As I type this, I watch the clock tick towards my 50th birthday. Now, some will say, “you’re over the hill.” ABSOLUTELY NOT. For one, the gift I was given via heart transplant nearly 12 years ago has set me on a path up the next mountain. For all my challenges and valleys in life, I’m forever grateful, as they made the mountain top much more beautiful. Second, the mountain peak I’m climbing leads me to the LORD, so from my perspective, there’s no higher ground. I have no intention of stumbling or any fear that I’ll reach the top only to fall on the other side.
