An eighth-grade student was asked to write an essay on “Thieves.”

He argued, quite brilliantly, that thieves are essential to the economy. They create demand for locks, CCTV cameras, security guards, lawyers, judges, and prison wardens. When your phone gets nicked, you buy a new one — great for retail. The more ambitious ones go into politics, where the opportunities are frankly much better.

His teacher gave him full marks.

Another student was then asked: “What if we replaced thieves with justice?”

He wrote that money spent on padlocks gets spent on schools instead. Prison budgets become hospital budgets. People buy things because they want to — not because their last one was stolen. Honest people enter politics and actually build something.

His teacher gave him full marks too.

The first student received three job offers from political parties.

The second was told his ideas were “admirable, but a touch idealistic.”

And that is the real lesson.

We do not lack solutions. We lack the will to build systems around purpose rather than problems.

We have entire industries built on dysfunction — and we call it progress.

Imagine what we could build if justice was the starting point, not the afterthought.

IPO Cancelled: Garmin just bought Strava for $2.1 Billion. But what does this mean for the purpose of our sweat, our struggles, and our small wins?

Strava, the digital home for millions of athletes, was on its way to an IPO. Now, it’s part of Garmin. On the surface, it’s a massive financial play ($2.1Bn!). But for those of us who track every run, every ride, every personal best—what does this mean for the soul of our progress?

As someone exploring Purpose-driven journeys on The Purpose Cast, I can’t help but wonder: Does this acquisition enhance the ‘Progress Principle’ for athletes, or does it shift the focus from community and personal achievement to corporate synergy and data?

Strava built a powerful purpose around celebrating those small, consistent efforts. Will that human-centric motivation thrive under a new umbrella, or will the pursuit of scale overshadow the individual stories that make Strava so special?

What are your thoughts? Will this accelerate our collective fitness purpose, or dilute it?

The 6 AM Email: When the ‘Future of AI’ Feels Like a Punch to the Gut.

Imagine waking up to a 6 AM email that changes everything.

For 30,000 Oracle employees today, that was their reality.

The official line?

AI transformation. The future is here, and some roles are no longer needed.

But as someone who believes in Purpose-driven progress, I can’t help but see a different story unfolding.

It’s like a grand old house (Oracle) deciding to build a futuristic new wing (AI data centers).

They borrow heavily, promising a magnificent future. But then, to pay for this shiny new wing, they suddenly fire all the experienced caretakers and chefs (Revenue and Health Sciences teams) who were keeping the current house running beautifully.

They say, “The new wing will run itself!” But the truth is, the money ran out. This isn’t AI transformation; it’s a desperate scramble for cash, a ‘margin call’ dressed up as strategy.

The real cost isn’t just on a balance sheet. It’s in the quiet bleed of institutional knowledge, the broken trust, and the human stories behind those 30,000 emails.

It’s a stark reminder that true progress isn’t just about technological leaps or financial bets. It’s about the people, the purpose, and the sustainable, human-centric growth that builds a lasting legacy.

When does the pursuit of a ‘future narrative’ overshadow the human purpose of our organizations?

What kind of legacy are we truly building?
