Here's a historical snippet to kick off our day: Did you know that back in the 1900 Olympics, live pigeon shooting was an actual event? It's the only time in Olympic history where animals were intentionally killed during the games. Participants had to shoot and down as many pigeons as possible, released 27 meters away. The event got quite gruesome, with nearly 300 birds killed and the victor was the one who shot the most.

Live pigeon shooting was featured in two competitions, the Grand Prix du Centenaire and the Grand Prix de l'Exposition universelle de 1900. In the end, the winners agreed to split the substantial prize of 20,000 Francs. It's a stark reminder of how sports and societal values have evolved over the last century.

Have you ever wondered how a spring-powered air rifle, often referred to as a "Springer," operates? Well, it's a fascinating piece of mechanical engineering, and understanding it can enhance our appreciation of the sport.

Here's a quick breakdown of how it works:

Pellet Loading: A pellet is inserted into the barrel of the air rifle.
Spring Compression: When you cock the rifle, the spring is compressed and held in place by a latch connected to the trigger mechanism.
Air Compression: As the spring is compressed, it creates a pocket of air at atmospheric pressure in the cylindrical housing just behind the pellet.
Trigger Release: Pulling the trigger releases the spring.
Air Expansion: The spring expands rapidly, pushing a piston forward, which compresses the air in front of it.
Pellet Propulsion: The compressed air then forces the pellet out of the barrel at high speed.
The beauty of a Springer lies in its simplicity and the mechanical advantage it gives with just a few moving parts. Remember, while these rifles might seem simple, handling them safely and with expertise is what sets apart true enthusiasts from novices.

Did you know that the 1896 Summer Olympics marked the debut of Shooting events? 🎉 At the newly constructed shooting range in Kallithea, Athens, five exciting events took place, organized by the Sub-Committee for Shooting.
With 61 skilled shooters from 7 nations - Denmark, France, Great Britain, Greece, Italy, Switzerland, and the United States - the competition was fierce and thrilling! 🌍💥
Greece showed incredible prowess, clinching 9 medals: 3 gold, 3 silver, and 3 bronze! 🥇🥈🥉 Meanwhile, the United States displayed remarkable skill, securing 2 gold and 1 silver medal. 🇺🇸✨ Denmark also left their mark with 1 silver and 2 bronze medals! 🏅

Air Pistol 10m: This event requires athletes to use a 0.177 calibre air pistol, aiming at targets 10 meters away. The 10 ring diameter for these targets is 11.5 mm, challenging shooters to be incredibly precise.

Air Rifle 10m: Shooters use a 0.177 calibre air rifle, also shooting at targets at a distance of 10 meters, requiring excellent marksmanship. For this event, the 10 ring measures a mere 0.5 cm.

Rapid Fire Pistol 25m: A dynamic event where competitors use a 0.22 calibre pistol to rapidly shoot at targets 25 meters away. The targets used have a 10 ring with a 10 cm diameter, testing the shooters' speed and precision.

Long Rifle 50m 3 Position / Prone: In this discipline, athletes use a 0.22 calibre rifle in three positions—standing, kneeling, and prone (lying down)—at targets 50 meters away. Here, the 10 ring has a tiny 10.4 mm diameter in all positions, demanding pinpoint accuracy.

Skeet Shooting: Involves shooting clay targets that are mechanically flung into the air from two fixed stations at high speed. These clay pigeons are 11 cm in diameter, flying at unpredictable angles.

Trap Shooting: Shooters aim at clay targets launched from a single machine away from them, challenging their quick response and accuracy. The clay targets for trap shooting are also 11 cm in diameter, moving at swift speeds.
