I began videotaping trains on Colorado's Denver-Pueblo Joint Line in December 1985, with an RCA VHS camcorder. Since then I have filmed trains throughout Colorado, throughout much of the United States, and briefly in England. For many years I used a Panasonic AG-450 Super-VHS “Reporter” camcorder. For the last twenty years, I have been filming using a Canon GL-2. Why have I not upgraded to something more contemporary? The primary reason is that I like filming in the standard definition (4:3) aspect ratio, as opposed to high definition (6:9). Folks think that high def makes the screen larger by expanding the left and right sides. Instead, I think high def cuts off the top and bottom of the screen. Go to any IMAX theatre. Look at the dimensions of the screen. It’s 4:3! I also really like Canon’s GL-2. My passion is for Colorado and Southwest railroads, for the beautiful scenery that they traverse. Much of my latest work has concentrated there.

The Sierra Hotel and Puget Sound are properly restored vista-dome lounge cars, among several refurbished historic rail passenger cars in the modern era. Occasionally, its owners will charter trips on the rear of regularly scheduled Amtrak trains for cross-country outings. In 2010, the Sierra Hotel and Puget Sound were among several vintage cars operating on the rear of the eastbound Southwest Chief, as it trundled passed a pair of classic semaphore signals, in Bernal, New Mexico. Look for them in the next production to premiere on this channel, entitled, "Sept 2010 Private Cars Semaphore Signals & Amtrak's Southwest Chief, Santa Fe Raton & Glorieta Subs." Union Pacific celebrated America's founding by operating the "250th Anniversary Special," beginning with a trip west from Cheyenne, Wyoming, in March 2026. A special passenger train was pulled by the railroad's largest operating steam locomotive, UP no. 4014, a 4-8-8-4 Big Boy-class engine built in 1941. Here, the Big Boy passes through Point of Rocks, Wyoming, on the Rawlins Subdivision, just before arriving in Rock Springs. This locomotive and train are featured in the next production to premiere on this channel, entitled, "March 2026 Big Railroad Big Steam, UP 4014, UP C44ACM ES44AC AC44CCTE AC4400CW SD70AH SD70ACe SD70M." Norfolk Southern no. 4220, a rebuilt AC44C6M, is an end-of-train helper on an eastbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe empty coal train, as it trundles through Keenesburg, Colorado, on its way back to the coal fields of the Powder River Basin in Wyoming. Serving as foreign power on BNSF's coal route in 2025, no. 4220 is a fine example of Norfolk Southern's conversion program, turning DC (direct current) electric motors into AC (alternating current) electric-motored diesel locomotives, as part of an overall locomotive upgrade and rebuilding effort. Several "new" NS AC44C6M units were operating as foreign power on BNSF. Such examples appear in the next production to premiere on this channel, entitled, "Nov-Dec 2025 NS AC44C6M & BNSF Freights in Southern Colo, BNSF GP39-2 SD70ACe ET44C4 ES44C4 C44-9WH1." Dome observation car "Sierra Hotel" has its end-of-train mars light on, as a string of privately owned and operated passenger cars head west to Alamosa, Colorado, on the San Luis & Rio Grande Railroad. In September 2010, the Rio Grande Scenic hosted a rail excursion for the Association of American Private Rail Car Owners. The Sierra Hotel is one of several lovingly preserved historic passenger cars that made up this very unique train. The trip between Walsenburg and Alamosa was a scenic one, traversing the famous La Veta Pass of the old Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad. This train and others appear in the next production to premiere on this channel, entitled, "Sept 2010 Private Cars Semaphore Signals & Amtrak's Southwest Chief, Raton Glorieta Alamosa Division." Union Pacific no. 5868 is a newly rebuilt C44ACM, originally built by General Electric as an AC4400CW. Showing off the railroad's latest paint scheme, no. 5868 leads a westbound freight train under this rare cantilever signal, near Hermosa Road at Tie Siding, Wyoming. The signals at Tie Siding had not been modernized by March 2026, as they remain to be classic searchlight signals from back in the day. Enjoy trains of the modern Union Pacific Railroad on the Overland Route in the next production to premiere on this channel, entitled, "March 2026 UP The Laramie Sub., UP Steam 4014 Big Boy, C44ACM ET44AH ES44AC AC44CCTE, SD70ACe SD70M." Former Santa Fe Railway B40-8W, no. 521, leads a general freight train northbound over the Palmer Divide in Palmer Lake, Colorado, in May 1999. The Burlington Northern Santa Fe merger is just a few years old, at this point. No. 521 has been relettered for the new railroad, but retained its classic Santa Fe warbonnet paint scheme. The railroad's rainbow era of locomotives was in full bloom by this time. Many trains of this nature appear in the next production to premiere on this channel, entitled, "1998-99 Colo. Joint Line Legacy Classic, BN SD40-2 SD70MAC, ATSF B40-8W C40-8W C44-9W, SP AC4400CW." Posting is scheduled for Thursday, June 4, 2026, at 2:45pm MDT. Burlington Northern no. 2832 was originally built as an EMD GP30. It is representative of many former GP30 locomotives which BN had rebuilt during the early 1990s. Such a locomotive is featured in the next production to premiere on this channel, entitled, "Oct-Dec 2025 BN GP39E & Colo Joint Line, BNSF GP39-3 ET44AH ET44C4 ES44AH ES44C4 SD70ACe C44-9W H1." Something a little different this time. These O-scale trains were built to represent railroads of the Eastern United States, such as the Pennsylvania Railroad and New York Central, during the late 1940s. They appear in operation in the next production to premiere on this channel, entitled, "Nov. 2025-Apr. 2026 O Gauge Model Trains; Pennsylvania Railroad & New York Central, late 1940s." A westbound Union Pacific freight train takes track three, under a signal bridge with old-style searchlight signals, in Tie Siding, Wyoming, on UP's Laramie Subdivision. It was a lovely October sunset in 2025. This and many other trains, on Union Pacific's Overland Route, appear in the next production to premiere on this channel, entitled, "Oct-Nov 2025 UP Laramie & Sidney Subs C44AC ES44AC ES44AH C44ACM SD70M SD70ACe SD70AH GP40M-2 GP38-2."
