Salt Life

Captain Skipper Gentry has been with Team Salt Life for almost a decade. A native of Morehead City, North Carolina, he’s been on boats his whole life—a dream that started on a six-foot plastic boat has turned into captaining a small fleet of 58-footers docked across the East Coast, the Bahamas, and Costa Rica. Captain Skipper has managed to find a way to make a living doing what he loves. His fishing charter, Carolina Gentleman, offers guests the chance to experience some of the best sportfishing in the Americas. These days, Skipper is based in Quepos, Costa Rica, where he and his partner Kellie spend their days fishing in the Pacific and befriending the howler monkeys that inhabit Costa Rica’s rainforest canopy. Curious to know what it takes to build a life on the water, we asked Skipper to share some of his wisdom with us. Read on for Captain Skipper’s best advice on living the salt life as a charter captain. Read more: bit.ly/TDSCharterCaptainSkipper

You can usually find Salt Life Team Member Emmanuel Williams zipping around off the South Florida Coast in a Sea Doo. An avid angler, Emmanuel spends his days targeting pelagic fish like tuna, Mahi, wahoo, and sailfish. But his latest adventure was something else entirely: a four-night camping trip at Lake Powell, the immense man-made reservoir that straddles the Utah-Arizona border. Kris Hopkins is one of Salt Life’s newest team members. Kris grew up on Galveston Island, a barrier island just south of Houston, and, like his father, he grew up surfing. Kris has been a competitive surfer since he was 10 years old. However, South Texas surfers have found a solution to that problem in the form of tanker surfing. Rather than letting the surf come to you, tanker surfing involves chasing the waves created by the massive ships that pass through Houston’s shipping channels. Here, Kris breaks down everything you need to know about getting after tanker waves. bit.ly/TDSTankerSurfing

Salt Life

Salt Life Team Member Jen Maguire is an avid angler based in East Texas. But when her boyfriend Robert started running fishing charters out of Los Buzos Fishing Resort in Panama, she knew it was time to bring her skill to warmer waters. The first time Jen went to Los Buzos, she slipped in a tide pool and suffered a nasty concussion. She made a miraculous recovery and managed to reel in a 60-pound yellowfin tuna the very next day. Her most recent fishing trip was less eventful, but she still caught some beautiful fish—and found herself in an epic battle with a monster! The waters off the Panamanian coast are home to some of the most sought-after species in the world, where adventurous anglers target species such as marlin, mahi, wahoo, sailfish, grouper, cubera snapper, almaco jack, and even the highly sought-after roosterfish. Captain Daniel Ramos is one of Salt Life’s newest charter captains and works full-time in Miami, where he’s something of a local legend. He’s been on the South Florida water since his first boat ride at four months old. Captain Daniel is an expert angler who specializes in deep water pelagic fish including wahoo, mahi, and—his favorite—the almighty swordfish. Daytime swordfishing is a relatively new fishery, having started only 15 or 20 years ago. Captain Daniel loves the challenge of wrangling this beautiful, tasty, fearsome species, and continues learning more about the species and the sport every day. Captain Daniel sat down with us to offer a few tips for catching one of these elusive creatures: bit.ly/TDSSwordfishCaptainDaniel
