Tokyo Grit and Grain

I'm Jason Garcia, the photographer behind Tokyo Grit and Grain. I've been shooting for nearly 40 years and have spent the last eight living in Tokyo, walking its streets with a camera almost every day. I shoot both film and digital rigs, focusing on the backstreets, the quiet corners, and the in-between moments most people overlook. On this channel you'll find street photography, editing tips, bits of gear, and a straight-up look at how I work. If you're into that kind of thing, you're in the right place.

Tokyo Grit and Grain

Good afternoon, from a gloomy Saturday in Tokyo!
Some of you may know that I don't shoot color film very much. And if you don't know, well, it's mostly because I have never achieved results that I truly like. Anywho, next week I'm headed back to my childhood home, San Diego, California. For those who don't know where that is, it's on the southern west coast of the United States. I've purchased ten rolls of Kodak Ultramax (+ a couple rolls of Portra 800) and I'll be shooting those to my heart's delight. These shots will be random AND thought out. I just want to have a good time and shoot what I find. So be on the lookout for non-Tokyo images. Heaven forbid! Heh. See you soon.

Yesterday, I stumbled upon a knife sharpening event at Ebisu Shrine. It was very interesting because I thought about how I NEVER see anything like this. People come with their knifes, some grannies check the blades and wrap 'em up and then some fellows wet sand them all. Pretty cool.

This time of year in Japan, we're constantly bombarded with saturated photos of cherry blossoms and scenes that depict a wide array of locations and touristy vibes. So, when I was out shooting, I thought differently, and decided to craft some images with black & white film. That last photo is looking down into the river. These are shot with Ilford Delta 100 and developed with Kodak D-76. FOUR PHOTOS.

OK! So, I planned on shooting at least three rolls of film this past weekend, but only made it to two. Fuji 400 and 200. I also captured half a roll of 800T. I'll be dropping these off at my local mom & pop lab tomorrow. They do same-day dev & scan for a pretty decent price. I hope to craft a video about all this very soon. Stand by!

I'm off to Kyoto in a couple days. I'm thinking of shooting ALL B&W film. I'm hesitating, thinking I should ONLY shoot digital. It would be tough shooting both. What would you do? I want to know!

I've been overseas for the past couple weeks, enjoying the countryside in rural USA.

Keeping with the style and substance of my channel, I'm looking forward to editing a new video that features some small side streets in Tokyo. It'll show you all sorts of cool footage and early-morning shots of some tasty grit and grime, long before people hit the area for after-work dining.

Stay tuned!

I've been receiving lots of messages from people asking about what kind of B&W film they should use when starting off. Well, XP2 is by far the best stock to shoot for many reasons. Find out more, here:
