Welcome! In 2012, my wife and I built our own super-insulated home. The house is one and a half stories, which includes two lofts. To some, it would be considered small, but it's perfect for us, and is even larger than most apartments we have lived in. The house is so well insulated that we don't even need to run a heater, save for a couple months out of the year. Join us to see how we built it and what projects we continue to do!

We are constantly meeting like-minded people along the way who have their own twist on energy efficiency, which is awesome; the online community is great. Roof Extension? I'm working out the final drawings and debating about extending the roof overhang along one wall of the off grid cabin. This roof extension will be about 4 feet deep and the whole length of the wall, about 14 feet.
The benefit is sheltering the doorway as you walk up the front step.
The downside is the cost and time. This roof overhang will have to support over 3,000 pounds of snow load. This means the framing and connectors needed will be costly. Overall it doubles my framing budget.
What would you do if you were building an off grid cabin?

I'm about to start a new build of an off-grid cabin. For my DIY off-grid cabin build, what level of insulation are you most interested in seeing me install for maximum comfort and efficiency? Note: the better the insulation you do, the smaller the heating and cooling systems you need to buy.
