the story was made of two animals
a songbird and a snake
two parallel lines that shouldn’t intersect
a capitol boy and a district girl

with voices that couldn’t be stopped
and guile to get what they want

the songbird is outspoken
she sung loud for her truth
with a desire for freedom and autonomy
knowing she had to flee
to have the ability to fly wherever she wanted
and live by her right
he too sang for his beliefs
spitting out the propaganda fed to him
that lead to his “friend’s” blood on his hands
with the willingness to always return to the gilded cage
and a hunger for control
to clip the wings of others

the snake is cunning
he had deceived everyone once held dear
a lavish life with a prestigious name
that was really a dress shirt made of curtains
to cheat and hurt maybe for love
so his girl would win and stay with him
though a falter would make her leave in the end
she had performed for her life
clever enough to know it was the only thing that could save her
fear that she would never return home
hidden under a siren’s voice and guitar
merely a pawn in his lies
even if she could survive with her own tricks
that let her escape when she needed to most
