This is a graph that an ankylosing spondylitis client has just sent me. See how the AS is spiking up and down throughout.
We’re having periods of feeling amazing and then the returning of a few pains (for differing reasons). A good mental picture of the overall improvement can be enough, but this client has actually gone to the effort of plotting a rolling average of pain levels over the months of working together and making the necessary changes.
I’m not saying everyone should do this, some people need less analysis to be honest. But we all need motivation and a reminder to be patient at times. Seeing a chart that depicts steady improvements might help keep you on the right tracks.
Just after my MRI in a hospital in Sri Lanka almost a decade ago. Happy face probably because I didn’t know what was to come.
This was 6 months into the ankylosing spondylitis pains and I’d already lost almost 15kg of weight. I still don’t believe how I managed to lose that much. 83kg down to 68kg.
This was still in the phase of thinking it was a bulging disc. The MRIs did pick up on the tiniest of bulges in my spine sending me on the wrong path for another 18 months. If only I’d have MRI’d the SIJs at this early stage.
I’d been hobbling round Asia for a few months. Enjoying the travelling just about thanks to my good friend ibuprofen. But some days I’d need help carrying my bags or wouldn’t even be able to leave the room.
I lose weight easy. So months of barely walking, no lifting, normal eating and the weight dripped off me.
Without making this email super long, I’ll jump right to the end (now), miss out the following years of more pain and the following years of a hell of a lot of research, work and experimentation and now… I’m back at 83kg and haven’t had a flare in a long time.
If I could go back to speak to this guy in the hospital in Sri Lanka, I’d say fly home now and commit 3-6 months of your life to learning and implementing everything you need to for your gut. This is where most of the pains are stemming from.
I’m 99.9% certain I’d be back on a plane out to Asia/Australia in no time to continue my travels with 0 pains at all and full control of the disease.
“I’m really skeptical about whether all this diet and supplementation work aimed at improving the gut can actually do anything for Ankylosing spondylitis”
Only a few months in to the work (and mid gut-protocol) and this is where we can get to.
If you’re in constant pain and battling an inflammatory arthritis condition like psoriatic arthritis or Ankylosing spondylitis - there is 100% a route out to fix it.

“Before linking up with Alex, I felt unsure and knew I needed guidance and direction with my AS diagnosis and symptom management.
The one-to-one coaching has been incredibly valuable. Being able to regularly talk things through with Alex, along with video calls where we review technique, form, and tailored routines for specific problem areas, has made a huge difference.
Everything feels personal, considered, and adjusted to what works for me.
Alex is a true expert in his field. From doing this programme, it’s clear that his depth of knowledge around training, lifestyle, and nutrition is outstanding.
The advice, techniques, and information he’s given me have led to a significant reduction in symptoms, through practical and realistic changes to diet and day-to-day habits.
What really sets Alex apart is how he combines technical expertise with genuine care and clarity. I’ve always felt supported and confident with the plan we’re working through together.
Just as importantly, he’s a great communicator and an incredibly warm and helpful person.
I would wholeheartedly recommend Alex’s coaching to anyone considering taking a serious step towards managing their AS symptoms and ultimately improving their quality of life.“
The one thing that upsets me the most with diseases like ankylosing spondylitis is that there will be so many teenagers who will get this diagnosis and they just won’t hear anything about how the gut/diet/lifestyle plays a huge part in it.
And the reason why I say teenagers here and not just everyone who gets diagnosed with AS is because IT IS SO MUCH EASIER THE YOUNGER YOU LEARN THIS.
Not every teenager or parent will be going out their way to understand these sorts of things if they don’t have to. I understand that.
But I want it to be diagnosis straight to ‘oh wow I didn’t realise what an effect x,y,z was having on me’.
Not ‘oh that’s a shame take these medications and see you in 6 months’ (I know this isn’t in every case).
This 16 year old tennis player here is the perfect example of this - and nothing makes me happier than knowing the pains and (let’s be honest) misery he’s hopefully avoided.
I had my own experience of this at age 24 with 2 years of disease progression. Small dietary changes and BANG all pains and inflammation gone, literally like magic.
Everyone can see drastic changes with these sorts of interventions - but if you’re 21 and have just been diagnosed, wow you’re in a good place if you start the work now.
