Rin co-authored the May 2026 EFF analysis with Dave Maass that read the reason fields police type when they run a plate. What came back wasn't the war on crime. It was school residency verification, employment background checks, and noise complaints, running on a nationwide camera network. In Buford, residency checks were more than half of all searches, and three quarters of them by early 2026.

We get into what a single plate query actually puts on the screen in front of an officer, why police need a judge for phone location data but not for a database tracking the same movements, and what a vendor-scripted pitch sounds like when a department brings it to a city council vote.

Then the turn. Texas and Florida pulled back four days apart, both under Republican governors. Through August, roughly three localities a day cut ties with Flock. Rin works statehouses for a living, so she has a clear read on why a governor's memo moved in thirty days what bills couldn't move in years, and why EFF's position is now elimination rather than regulation.

Last year the Supreme Court upheld Texas HB 1181 in Free Speech Coalition v. Paxton, and age verification went from a talking point to settled law. Now Texas wants that ID check pushed all the way down to the app store, with Apple, Google, and Amazon fighting it in court. Utah went further and became the first state to write VPN users directly into an age verification statute. Brown has been reading the throughline the whole time: every one of these mandates is a checkpoint, and the checkpoints keep moving closer to a single national digital ID.

We get into where that road ends, why the same Ken Paxton who won at the Supreme Court is now Brown's opponent in the race, and what a repeal-first platform actually does about any of it.

Brown pulled more than 267,000 votes in his 2024 Senate run and has been a party member since 1979. He has thought about this longer than most people have known to worry about it.
