One nickname. One speakerphone call. One unforgettable lesson. It’s 2006. We’re playing the Lakers and Gilbert Arenas is talking reckless. I tell him, “If Kobe’s the Black Mamba, you the Black Mongoose.” He drops 60—and immediately forgets the animal. Postgame, stuck on the runway. Caron Butler gets Kobe Bryant on speaker. Gil yells “MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE! MONGOOSE!” Kobe: “You asked for this.” Click. Two months later Kobe pulls up, skips every handshake, goes straight to Gil, drops 40, hits a 360, does the airplane… Lakers by 20. Lesson learned: don’t mess with the Mamba.
