Gibraltar belongs to...?
I seriously don't understand why so many folks insist Gibraltar belongs to Spain.
Back in 1968, literally less than 1% of Gibraltar's population were in favour of Spanish sovereignty, with the vast majority of them prefer remaining British. Even 34 years later, in 2002, they still showed an overwhelming desire to stay British.
Imo the fate of Gibraltar should primarily be decided by its residents. Isn't it quite amusing that many people claiming Gibraltar to be part of Spain aren't even British or Spanish citizens? I'm sorry to say it. But they have no skin in the game.
Plus, when you consider the stats, the UK offers a lower unemployment rate, a far higher GDP per capita, and a far better median wage than Spain. Don't you think it's quite unethical to impose the social problems Spain grapples with the residents of Gibraltar? Why couldn't they just remain British if it's their preference? And let's not forget that Gibraltar has been a British territory for over 300 years. I guess the majority of them wouldn't want a sudden change in their self-identity and nationality.
