When painting portraits of rosy-cheeked children, it’s crucial to always keep the volume and roundness of the cheek in mind. We want to lighten the rosy flush as the cheek turns toward the light. Too dark of a pink all over can make the face feel flat or dirty. This is a little oil study of my baby, painted using the Warm-Cool Palette (there’s a mixing guide for the palette on my website).

🎨 Nearly finished art projects... Do you like to have multiple projects going at the same time, or do you like to finish one before starting another?

Getting the eyes right in a portrait can require a lot of time and patience. After the first painting pass, I spent two more hours refining the eye in this portrait (using the Warm-Cool Palette).

To paint this eye, I started with the Warm-Cool Palette, and then added reds and pinks for the final touches. The link to this Eye Demo is in the pinned comments if you’re interested. 🎨

Do you prefer "direct painting" (alla prima) or "indirect painting" (more than one layer)?
