They were stronger, faster, bigger and more aggressive than them.
Which caused pantherine cats to completely eliminate them and become top cats but in the old world.
In the new world they survived much longer.
Only going extinct 10,000 years ago.
In the new world since the machairodont cats such as Smilodon were similar in size to pantherine cats such as American lion it was more tough and harder for the pantherine cats. Aside from the jaguar, pantherine cats were completely extinct in the new world along with the machairodont cats.
