We are seeing record-high premium increases on Medicare Supplement plans. More people are choosing Medicare Advantage plans over traditional Medicare, making the pools of people Med Sups smaller. When a year or two of high claims inevitably happens, the insurance companies have fewer “healthy” people to offset their high medical expenses that they are covering / paying for. Therefore, they must raise your rates to help recoup the costs.
So, what can you do? Well, for one, find a great broker who has access to MANY different insurance companies and plans. That broker should have access to tools that show data on these different plans that will help them make a better educated guess as to which companies will have lower rate increases. Keep in mind, no one has a crystal ball, and the Medicare market is always changing. The best strategy, in our opinion, is to find a larger company who has been in the market awhile, has a high rating, and has a history of lower rate increases.
