🌪️The animation “Spinning Days” by Anne Chpakovski explores blurry boundaries of an intense female friendship. Like a diary unfolding before us, through painted animation, the film is a stream of thought and memories about intimate slices of life. As the film gradually unfolds, the unspoken details and memories of her relationship with her best friend reveal much stronger, repressed feelings, causing her emotional turmoil. A particularly singular animation that immediately grabs the viewer with this stream of consciousness that opens up its troubled inner world.
🖤"House of Broken Hearts“ (by Aisha Madu) and its cartoonish animation explores the first love breakup and its flood of emotions between disappointment, sadness, anger, one-night stand, and healing. Whimsical 2D animation takes us through a labyrinth of metaphors, reflecting the trials Anna must face as her relationship ends. Driven by the voice of LA-based lyrical artist Kilo Kish, this tragicomic animation wants to make the broken-hearted smile at the sad side of love.

⛰️🍃With the Cannes Film Festival in full swing, let's turn the spotlight on a short film selected at La Semaine de la Critique at Cannes Festival by emerging filmmaker Manon Coubia. “Children Leave at Dawn” tells of an inevitable departure: the separation of a mother from her son. Mo, her 17-year-old son, with whom she broke all ties, must attend the ceremony during which he will become mountain infantryman in French military. Through mountains, the son carries his mother for their last journey together....
📽️By inviting us into the space-time of the last moments, the last day of the mother and son, the filmmaker plunges us into this torn relationship where unease reigns, which neither of them seeks to completely dispel, for their reunion is also a farewell. Close-ups of faces and the son's transformed body highlight the emotional stakes and the mother-child rift. At the same time, the realism and prevailing calm give us the impression of being in a documentary about young people going off to war. A simple story on paper but highly complex and moving. This short film selected at Cannes and many other prestigious festivals, not to be missed!

🤿A stunning ecological fable, “Wild Summon” by duo Karni Arieli & Saul Freed immerses us in the skin of a female salmon appearing as a real woman, allowing us to experience a deeper connection with this endangered poison. Combining animation with live-action underwater photography, the film offers a magnificent visual backdrop to its fantastic yet very real universe, which spares us nothing about the brutality of the world and its law of the strongest. The film's strength lies in its ability to get us to embrace the fish's survival, and to connect with another species inhabiting the planet. Awarded at numerous festivals, including Cannes, and narrated by the gravelly voice of Marianne Faithfull, this animation is a must-see.
🌳 “The Purple Season” by Clémence Bouchereau is also a story of survival, in the style of “Lord of the Flies”. It follows a band of young girls led by an older one on the edge of a wild mangrov , where puberty is knocking at the door, giving the story an initiatory flavour. But the film's most distinctive feature is its hypnotic pin-screen animation, with its grainy, wispy look. This allows the bodies to move more lyrically in their natural environment. Stripped of its action, the animation reveals a troubling, timeless, dreamlike atmosphere. An intriguing, magnetic, unique film, “The Purple Season”, unveiled at La Semaine de la Critique at Cannes Festival, is a must-see!

This week we released a refreshing short film by Gabrielle Demers, a young Quebec filmmaker to keep an eye on. “Iris” deals with the awakening of desire, on the verge of explosion and confusing Emmanuelle's body, as she can't get Laura, a classmate, out of her mind. In just 10 minutes, the film manages to create an oppressive atmosphere, its close-ups on the interplay of looks, body parts, highlighting the turmoil overwhelming Emmanuelle, evoking Breillat's cinema of desire and Sciamma's “Water Lilies”. A queer short film not to be missed!

📽️🎨 This week KIS KIS puts the light on a genius of the animation: Donato Sansone. Don’t miss these premium shorts by subscribing to our channel memberships for 4,99€/month! youtube.com/channel/UCW6NyJ6oFLPTnx7iGRZXDDg/join
Entering the world of Donato Sansone is like an invitation to a journey of dreams and nightmares. Both surreal and provocative, his eclectic films play with the medium of animation to better explore the notion of the body, like Francis Bacon's haunted paintings. The two animations we're featuring this week incorporate this idea, with “Robhot” and its sketchy drawings presenting a battle between two humanoid robots where absurdity gives way to a tender ending.
While with “Videogioco”, Sansone's inventive flipbbok animation is full of hilarious black humor. A non-sense story that begins with a fist and a cut head... but impresses in its execution, his film could be watched endlessly to capture all its comic and trivial essence.
An avant-garde filmmaker whose work has been shown at the world's greatest festivals, his eclectic and provocative visual art is definitely a must-see!

📽️🎨 This week KIS KIS focuses on painting and cinema. Don’t miss these premium shorts by subscribing to our channel memberships for 4,99€/month! youtube.com/channel/UCW6NyJ6oFLPTnx7iGRZXDDg/join
🖌️Let’s start with the new animation of the great Georges Schwizgebel “From one painting… to another”, an immersion in art through two paintings on the same subject created half a century apart. Taking Manet's famous “Olympia” and Félix Valloton's “La blanche et la noire” as his central subjects, Schwizgebel focuses our attention on the representation of people of color and women through art history, along with the power mechanisms and male-gaze prevalent in the world of painting. Always with the subtlety we know and an animation in perpetual motion and evolution, dancing to the rhythm of the music, the film takes a mesmerizing and fascinating turn, but don't let the animation's playful appearance fool you. A more political tone takes shape at the end, when we realize that whatever the changes in form and style, the mechanisms of power remain the same throughout the painting history.
👩🎨The duo's second “Four Chambers to Heart” follows the same path as Schwizgebel's, but this time spotlights a forgotten figure in art history: Sofonisba Anguissola. A great patron of the arts and the first Renaissance female artist to achieve international fame during her lifetime, she was also Van Dyck's teacher, and the film weaves its narrative through one of her letters written during her confinement to Palermo in 1624 due to the plague. The surreal animation recreates her paintings and her personal landscape with an intimate feel that plunges us directly into the Italian painter's vibrant and impressive life. A film that puts the spotlight back on an important woman of her time and in the history of painting, not to be missed!

🏙️🚶 “The Great Arc” by Camille Authouart is a poetic look at the most modern of Parisian districts: La Défense. The film takes its camera around this business district, with its high skyscrapers overlooking the anonymous silhouettes swarming through the space made of steel and glass. Camille Authouart brings this human anthill to a standstill, to create an ode to the beauty of its urban architecture but also to the natural poetry of everyday life. The deeply melancholy pencil animation, immersive sound design and delicate narration capture the alienating Kafkaesque atmosphere of La Défense. It's a fresh look at the storytelling power of animated documentary!
🚢 “View” takes a sharper, more absurd look at the modern landscape and the excesses of capitalism. Positioning her cameras in a small, human-sized Norwegian town, the director Odveig Klyvel leaves the images speak for themselves to capture the revolting truth of the present: the arrival of a giant cruise ship as if it were going to engulf the town. The minimalist style of the direction makes the documentary even more powerful, showing the arrival of this huge ship as if it were natural, distorting the whole atmosphere of the place. In just 4 minutes, the short film is a recital on tourism, capitalism and urban space.

💫🎥While fantastical creatures have been occupying cinema with releases such as "Nosferatu" and "Sinners", don't miss our witchy short film “Luz, A Witch Story” by Julie Roy. A fantastic immersion in a Montreal in the grip of supernatural phenomena, where one day Luz, an ambulance driver, discovers the lifeless body of a woman. A dream reveals to her the identity of the murderer, with whom she engages in a duel on the frontiers of the supernatural.
Rivette's “Duelle” quickly comes to mind, with its soaring atmosphere, far from demonstrative, space-time disruptions where mystical and mysterious powers are unleashed. The magic operates immediately in this cinematic adventure, where we'd love to delve even deeper into the universe. Not to be missed!

📷✨You might think you're in Lynch or Bertrand Mandico universe, in the surreal, phantasmic world of Stephanie Schneider's “Heather's Dreams”. In the middle of the Californian desert, a different, strange world of vivid colors opens up: Heather (Heather Megan Christie) lies on her bed and narrates off screen: "One morning I didn't wake up. I had a fever". And then finds herself in a dazzling desert landscape. Here a magic doctor (Udo Kier) pursues his work in his office. Something is going on. Everything seems to be prepared. Constructed like a photo-novel with a succession of still Polaroids image, the short film unfolds a mysterious narrative where the boundary between dreams and reality is blurred. For Lynch lovers, this is a film not to be missed!
🌆🚗Julien Regnard's “Night Watch” is closer to Kubrick's “Eyes Wide Shut”, a world of paranoia, where fantasies and reality collide: A couple rushes out of a glamorous party. On their way home, an argument leads to a brutal car accident. When George regains consciousness, Christina has disappeared. He will then experience a real descent into hell. Carried along by superb black-and-white animation, in the style of a Film Noir from the 40s and 50s, this night-time world of excess and hallucination manages to make us doubt reality. Dark, haunting and gripping, this animation has been selected for major festivals and is a must-see.

In recent years, Latin American animation has explored the colonial past and the traumas of the dictatorship years, with a strong penchant for horror and fantasy. Examples include the unique stop-motion “La Casa Lobo”, the short film ‘Bestia’ and also Patricio Plaza's “Flesh of God”, our film of the week. A plunge into Mexico's colonial past under Spanish rule through a priest's waking nightmare that will change him forever. The dark yet expressively superb animation captures the collective imagination of the period, as well as the repressive system of religion and its norms, which are turned upside down throughout the animation, soon turning to occult body horror as the priest undergoes the healing and rituals of the locals. An animated gem that has won awards at numerous festivals!
The stop-motion “Dead Horses” by the fantastic animator duo Marc Riba, Anna Solanas retains the same horrific atmosphere, but to denounce the horrors and madness of war. Immersing us in post-apocalyptic landscapes, the puppetwork animation gives a completely stunning texture at child height: a devastating loss of innocence for a little boy surrounded by the daily violence of war. The timeless aspect of the narrative gives it a universal scope and therefore an even more powerful resonance.
