Don’t let the industrial look fool you—the vibes at IJver were ✨immaculate✨. Warm lighting, comfy seating, and the kind of menu that makes you second-guess your first choice because literally everything looks good. 🫣

I had dinner here after wandering endlessly through NDSM and it turned out to be one of the best meals of the trip. I got the coq a la biere and the roasted leek (they now have roasted asparagus) but I still reaaally wanna try their seafood dishes. 😩🤤

There’s no way to capture everything the Rijksmuseum offers in just one post (or 2) —but here’s a final round of moments I couldn’t stop thinking about. Swipe ➡️

We’re starting with ‘𝓘𝓼𝓪𝓫𝓮𝓵𝓵𝓪’—a portrait by Simon Maris, painted around 1906. The subject, a young girl approximately twelve years old, posed in Maris’ Amsterdam studio. Over the years, the painting was given various titles, but archival research confirmed that Maris himself named it Isabella. Her true identity has never been confirmed though. There’s such a gentle energy to her—she’s graceful, composed, and quietly powerful. I was honestly mesmerized and proud to be a black woman.

From here, I wandered through rooms filled with Rembrandt, Vermeer, ship models, stained glass, and architecture that deserves its own spotlight.

If you’re heading to Amsterdam, carve out time for this place. It’s more than just a museum—it’s a full experience.

What’s the most memorable piece of art you’ve seen?

Just a 15-minute ferry ride from Amsterdam Centraal and suddenly…it feels like a whole different city.

Welcome to NDSM—once a massive shipyard, now one of the coolest and most creative neighborhoods in Amsterdam. Think bold street art, repurposed industrial buildings, pop-up restaurants, and waterfront hangouts!

It’s artsy and gritty, just how I like it. The kind of place where you’ll want to slow down, snap pics on every corner, and maybe even get inspired to paint something yourself…👀 I didn’t, but that’s bc I have no artistic bone in my body. 😅

OH! And don’t miss the STRAAT Museum while you’re there—it’s a whole experience of global street art under one huge roof.

And the best part? Getting there is super easy. Just hop on the FREE public ferry from behind Amsterdam Centraal Station. Yes, free..😉

I love when food tells a story. Dutch herring was once preserved for sailors in the 1300s, and that’s why people still eat it by grabbing the tail and tipping it back. It actually helped fuel the Dutch economy and is still a beloved snack across the region today.

I tried it both ways: street stall bites with pickles, then full traditional mode at a restaurant, after my server suggested I try it. It’s buttery, bright, and topped with loads of onions and pickles. It’s fascinating how such customs endure, isn’t it? Another way it’s served is on a bun, sandwich style, or broodje haring. I didn’t try it that way, but I can imagine it’s also pretty tasty.

I guess I can see how it’s an acquired taste for some, but I personally could’ve had at least a couple more because I enjoyed it that much.😅

Places I tried Dutch pickled herring:

In Amsterdam’s Leidseplein stands ‘Tegen alle stromen in’, which translates as ‘Against All Currents’, a monument honoring Peter R. de Vries — a journalist known for exposing injustice and standing up for victims. He was assassinated in 2021 for his relentless fight against organized crime. The sculpture features joined hands, symbolizing unity and resistance. The inclusion of “rules of life” in 41 languages symbolizes Peter R. de Vries’s dedication to human rights and the global relevance of his work.

When I stopped to admire it last fall, a local man noticed and asked if I knew the story behind it. I didn’t — but I wanted to. He shared who Peter was, what he stood for, and how deeply his work impacted people here. It made the monument feel even more powerful as I stood beside this stranger, taking it all in.

It’s in these moments that I’m reminded how much deeper travel becomes when you let human connection and stories lead the way.

Have you had a similar encounter while traveling? Let’s talk about it🩶

📍Chen’s Noodle House

Chen’s Noodle House brings warmth to every meal. The rice noodle soup with spicy beef was excellent and incredibly fragrant, and the silky wontons in chili oil were addictive. But y’all, the boiled fish with pickled cabbage and chili hit the spot.👌🏾I loved every bite—bright, tangy, and infused with a touch of Taiwanese homestyle cooking. 🍲 I could honestly eat that dish every day. They’ve also got other comforting Chinese classics on the menu, like congee with preserved egg and mapo tofu, which I already know I’ll be coming back for. ☺️
