You can enjoy a brew and a solo art exhibition!
If you find yourself in the wonderful city of Glendale and need a coffee pick me up, do check out KAFN Coffee at 1019 E. Palmer Ave.
Here's an after hours behind the scenes glimpse of setting up for an upcoming Solo Exhibition at @kafncoffeebar - possible with the great efforts of @sofiaharuty
I haven't given it an official name yet, but the idea "Phase 1" has come to mind.
It will go on through June.

A fun plein air paint session with the @pleinairventuracounty paint club at Xanabu aka Skysource Ranch in Malibu. Originally featured on Season 1 Episode 8 of HGTV "Homes."
This amazing ranch is on 90 incredible acres with incredible decorative vision. It had a great pond too that would have been very awesome to paint.

Can you spot the changes over time?
Got a few more sessions left with this.
Here's a personal thought artists might find amusing.
"It's not anywhere near as good as Michelangelo's."
I said that during the livestream because what came to mind for some reason was someone viewing might be thinking "pfsht that looks horrible compared to the original! How dare he attempt to copy Michelangelo until he's mastered painting over 30 years! It's nothing, not even close!" Hard to know who is watching sometimes or if I'm just projecting a self-critical fear in some way.
I have had some super critical feedback from some hardcore uptight artists who believe you shouldn't try certain things until you "qualify" through some arbitrary mastery level. Like there needs to be a level of permission.
Someone once wrote to me something along the lines of I shouldn't continue painting unless I spend 10 years in mastery of the basics through drawing, like they have. I think they were serious.
The amusement I found was that I even felt the need to make the comment at all. It's almost too obvious that it wouldn't possibly be near as good one of the greatest artists who ever lived (given the materials, reference, etc...). I know and realize that. My wonderful livestream viewers know that based on my past commentary.
But I couldn't help but think of the one rando (P.s. I'm very thankful for all my supporters) going "who does this guy think he is trying to copy a Michelangelo piece?"
Anyway, more on what inspired me to paint this in a future post, probably when I'm done. Something about overcoming a self-limiting block and other thoughts about more developed appreciation for oils.
The motivational message here would be don't let "arbitrary rules" limit your creative efforts!

Slowly but surely finishing up "Creation of Excellence."
P.S. Whoever the figure is in the original piece (circled in the last photo) makes me think of @hallebailey

"A Father in Contemplation" (Interpretation From 'Eraserhead' by David Lynch) 20x30 (inch) available in canvas print.
This painting reflects a key moment of a man in deep thought about their relationship with deformed child. David Lynch often used Francis Bacon for inspiration, and this piece brings inspiration from stylistic choices of Bacon to interpret a concept in the movie.

Work in Progress: "Creation of Greatness" (possibly changing to "Creation of Excellence")
My work sometimes needs lots of explaining since some of the ideas are more niche. But I'm pretty sure the composition of these two elements is so obvious anyone would get it.
Either way, tackling my fear of complex compositions and classical artworks by making a study and piece of it.

1. (Untitled)
2. Work in Progress: "Eraserhead Chillin with His Baby." (From "Eraserhead" by David Lynch)
1. I spend a lot of time sketching faces in abstract ways. By abstract ways, I mean learning from cubists. I probably make about 100 sketches of various people until I actually find one I like. I've only made a handful attempts at painting these cubist faces but this is probably the one I like the most.
The majority of the time my sketches just don't do it. It's challenging for me to think of forms like this. It used to be much more mind boggling to me of moving eyes and noses and mouths and other body parts around. But more importantly, doing it in a way that looks pleasing.
2. It's really interesting to look at the work of Francis Bacon and David Lynch together. It becomes very clear how Lynch was inspired by Bacon's paintings. I don't necessarily have proof and
Quite amazing how Lynch was able to find a way to tell stories around Bacon's work. From the reference of Bacon's Beast as Lynch's Eraserhead baby to the overall art direction of many of his shots.
This painting is an effort to tie the two together featuring a moment between the child and father from "Eraserhead."
Still working my way around navigating the geometry and clean edge work of Bacon but I decided to reduce the size of the room to a very claustrophobic "cube" almost as if they're on a stage while the actor performs as well.

"Portrait of Someone (probably)" 20x24
A title that aims to bring a sense of humor to a painting that looks and feels intensely haunting.
The painting has transformed away from the original concept and now I don't know who it looks like. But surely it's someone!
Note to self: Gotta come up with a good way to paint the eyes in this way.
