Representatives from communities affected by the Abia airport project staged a protest on Wednesday, accusing the state government of lacking transparency and fairness in acquiring lands for the development. The protesters, gathered at Umunkolo Civic Haall, displayed placards with messages like โAdequate compensation should be paid to landownersโ and โ30% discount not acceptable after 10% deduction by attorney,โ voicing concerns over the compensation process and unclear details about the land sizes acquired.
Chimaeze Nwabuko, a landowner from Umulenwa Mbawsi, expressed frustration with the governmentโs approach, while a female farmer among the group emphasized the need for fair compensation, particularly during the farming season. The protesters argued that the process lacked clarity and failed to address their concerns adequately.
In response, the Abia State government maintained that it had engaged the affected communities transparently and fairly, asserting that adequate compensation had been paid to landowners. The government reiterated its commitment to following due process in the projectโs execution.
Police officers stationed at the airport site entrance monitored the protest and advised the community members to channel their grievances peacefully to the state government rather than resorting to demonstrations.
Jubilation as Supreme Court judgement CTC affirms LP National Caretaker Committee
Supporters of the Senator Esther Nenadi Usman-led National Caretaker Committee of the Labour Party (LP) erupted in jubilation following the release of the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the Supreme Court judgment on the partyโs leadership dispute.
Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, who read excerpts from the document, announced that the court affirmed the leadership of Senator Usman.
According to him, the Supreme Court went further to admonish politicians to respect the tenures of office as stipulated in their respective political party constitutions.
Labour Party Accuses Peter Obi and Alex Otti of Attempting to Seize Control
The Labour Party (LP) has accused its former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Abia State Governor Alex Otti of orchestrating an illicit attempt to take over the partyโs structure. The allegations, leveled by LP National Secretary Umar Farouk Ibrahim, follow a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting convened by Obi and Otti, which the party leadership has branded as illegal.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Ibrahim criticized the duo for leading a factional group of LP members to the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja. The visit, spearheaded by Governor Otti, aimed to present INEC with a Certified True Copy of a recent Supreme Court judgment that sacked Julius Abure as LP National Chairman, barring him from holding the position.
Ibrahim described the move as a desperate bid to hijack the partyโs leadership. โThe mission has shown the high level of desperation of Peter Obi and Dr. Alex Otti in trying to hijack the structure of the party,โ he said. โIf really the Supreme Court decision is in their favor, why are they rushing to INEC to put undue influence on the Commission to do the wrong thing?โ
He further condemned the NEC meeting, calling it an โillegal gatheringโ and accusing Obi and Otti of โliving in an unhealthy paradise and deluding themselves.โ Ibrahim also revealed that during the meeting, the faction offered Abure a โsoft landingโ by proposing he take up the role of Chairman of the Board of Trustees. However, he dismissed the gesture, asserting, โAbure didnโt make himself the National Chairmanโฆ it is not about Abure but about what the structures have said. It is about the supremacy of the organs of the party and doing things right.โ
The Labour Party leadership has called on its members and the public to disregard the meeting and its outcomes, urging resistance to what it deems an unlawful power grab.

Once completed, it will stand as one of the finest conference centres in the world and the best in Nigeria.
In a stern appeal amid the countryโs ongoing security crisis, National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu has called on Nigerians to cease paying ransoms to kรฏdnappers and bandits, warning that such payments exacerbate the problem. Ribadu made the statement on Tuesday while receiving 60 kidnap victims recently freed from captivity in Zangon Kataf, Southern Kaduna, after a successful military operation.
The rescued victims, comprising 35 males and 29 females and children, were handed over at the National Counter-Terrorism Centre in Abuja. Among them were a Deputy Director in the civil service and a relative of Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, who had been held captive for over a month.
โPlease stop giving money to these people, it is the most difficult thing we are facing,โ Ribadu implored. He emphasized that ransom payments do not guarantee the release of victims, pointing out that many of those freed owed their liberation to security forces rather than financial transactions. โMany of these people, their families have given money to these people, but it did not lead to their own release. It is we the security forces that have brought them out,โ he said.
Ribadu warned that paying kidnappers fuels their activities nationwide, complicating efforts to curb the menace. โThe more you give, the more you compound the problem for us. We have never given anybody a dime and we donโt want people to do so,โ he stressed.
The NSA credited the rescue operationโs success to the relentless efforts of the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies. โLet me specially commend our armed forces and security services. Their tireless pursuit of these criminals is the reason we are here today,โ he said. He also praised President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering support, noting, โThanks to the commitment of Mr. President, we are making progress daily.โ
Ribadu vowed that the fight against kรฏdnappers and bandits would persist beyond the release of victims. โThe release of victims is not the end. We will continue to pursue these perpetrators and ensure they face justice,โ he assured.
