'USE PUBLIC RESOURCES FOR PUBLIC GOOD', MR. PETER OBI CHARGED LEADERS TO EMULATE GOVERNOR OTTI, AS BOTH LEADERS JOIN THE CATHOLIC FAITHFUL FOR THE 2025 CHRISM MASS IN ABA.

Earlier on Thursday, 17th April, the Executive Governor of Abia State, His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti alongside the Presidential Flag-bearer of the Labour Party in the 2023 General Election, and former Governor of Anambra State, His Excellency, Mr. Peter Gregory Obi joined the Catholic faithful and family at the Christ the King Catholic Church (CKC), Aba to commemorate the 2025 Chrism Mass.

Governor Otti during his short speech, thanked the Church for the support they have been giving his Government. He also appreciated them for being part of his political journey since 2014. Governor Otti promised to continue serving the interest of the people of Abia State. He illustrated with biblical references, Psalm 118:22, Matthew 21:42, and Acts 4:11, how the rejected stones of Aba and Abia State have become the cornerstone of the building. The Governor pledged to continue supporting the Church.

In his remarks, Mr. Peter Obi who was elevated to "Okwute Ndi Nigeria' by Governor Otti, pleaded with the Church to continue praying for Nigeria. He reiterated his signature slogan that leadership is the challenge of Nigeria. He admonished leaders across Nigeria to emulate Governor Alex Otti by using public resources for the welfare of the people.

The Bishop of Aba Diocese, Bishop, Prof. Augustine Ndubueze Echema thanked both leaders for joining the Church in the 2025 Chrism Mass and invited Governor Otti to come again and again until he is baptised to become a Catholic just like his dear wife. Bishop Ndubueze lauded Governor Otti for his infrastructural strides across the State, especially for cleaning-up Aba and opening-up Port-Harcourt Road which has opened access and drastically shortened travel time to Catholic Parishes along the corridor.

Governor Otti was joined in the Chrism Mass by the Speaker of Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, the Member representing Aba North State Constituency, Hon. Aaron Uzodike, the member representing Aba Central State Constituency, Hon. Ucheonye Steven, the Mayor of Aba South LGA, Hon. Obilor Anyanwu, the Mayor of Aba North LGA, Hon. Representatives from communities affected by the Abia airport project staged a protest on Wednesday, accusing the state government of lacking transparency and fairness in acquiring lands for the development. The protesters, gathered at Umunkolo Civic Haall, displayed placards with messages like โ€œAdequate compensation should be paid to landownersโ€ and โ€œ30% discount not acceptable after 10% deduction by attorney,โ€ voicing concerns over the compensation process and unclear details about the land sizes acquired.

Chimaeze Nwabuko, a landowner from Umulenwa Mbawsi, expressed frustration with the governmentโ€™s approach, while a female farmer among the group emphasized the need for fair compensation, particularly during the farming season. The protesters argued that the process lacked clarity and failed to address their concerns adequately.

In response, the Abia State government maintained that it had engaged the affected communities transparently and fairly, asserting that adequate compensation had been paid to landowners. The government reiterated its commitment to following due process in the projectโ€™s execution.

Police officers stationed at the airport site entrance monitored the protest and advised the community members to channel their grievances peacefully to the state government rather than resorting to demonstrations.

Labour Party Accuses Peter Obi and Alex Otti of Attempting to Seize Control

The Labour Party (LP) has accused its former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Abia State Governor Alex Otti of orchestrating an illicit attempt to take over the partyโ€™s structure. The allegations, leveled by LP National Secretary Umar Farouk Ibrahim, follow a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting convened by Obi and Otti, which the party leadership has branded as illegal.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Ibrahim criticized the duo for leading a factional group of LP members to the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja. The visit, spearheaded by Governor Otti, aimed to present INEC with a Certified True Copy of a recent Supreme Court judgment that sacked Julius Abure as LP National Chairman, barring him from holding the position.

Ibrahim described the move as a desperate bid to hijack the partyโ€™s leadership. โ€œThe mission has shown the high level of desperation of Peter Obi and Dr. Alex Otti in trying to hijack the structure of the party,โ€ he said. โ€œIf really the Supreme Court decision is in their favor, why are they rushing to INEC to put undue influence on the Commission to do the wrong thing?โ€

He further condemned the NEC meeting, calling it an โ€œillegal gatheringโ€ and accusing Obi and Otti of โ€œliving in an unhealthy paradise and deluding themselves.โ€ Ibrahim also revealed that during the meeting, the faction offered Abure a โ€œsoft landingโ€ by proposing he take up the role of Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
However, he dismissed the gesture, asserting, โ€œAbure didnโ€™t make himself the National Chairmanโ€ฆ it is not about Abure but about what the structures have said. It is about the supremacy of the organs of the party and doing things right.โ€

The Labour Party leadership has called on its members and the public to disregard the meeting and its outcomes, urging resistance to what it deems an unlawful power grab.

We are in discussions with a German company that designed and built the Kigali Confidence Centre in Rwanda, which I consider the best conference centre I've ever visited. They are now coming to Aba, behind Enyimba Hotel, to construct a conference centre that will surpass the beauty of Kigali's. Once completed, it will stand as one of the finest conference centres in the world and the best in Nigeria.

In a stern appeal amid the countryโ€™s ongoing security crisis, National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu has called on Nigerians to cease paying ransoms to kรฏdnappers and bandits, warning that such payments exacerbate the problem. Ribadu made the statement on Tuesday while receiving 60 kidnap victims recently freed from captivity in Zangon Kataf, Southern Kaduna, after a successful military operation.

The rescued victims, comprising 35 males and 29 females and children, were handed over at the National Counter-Terrorism Centre in Abuja. Among them were a Deputy Director in the civil service and a relative of Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, who had been held captive for over a month.

โ€œPlease stop giving money to these people, it is the most difficult thing we are facing,โ€ Ribadu implored. He emphasized that ransom payments do not guarantee the release of victims, pointing out that many of those freed owed their liberation to security forces rather than financial transactions. โ€œMany of these people, their families have given money to these people, but it did not lead to their own release. It is we the security forces that have brought them out,โ€ he said.

Ribadu warned that paying kidnappers fuels their activities nationwide, complicating efforts to curb the menace. โ€œThe more you give, the more you compound the problem for us. We have never given anybody a dime and we donโ€™t want people to do so,โ€ he stressed.

The NSA credited the rescue operationโ€™s success to the relentless efforts of the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies. โ€œLet me specially commend our armed forces and security services. Their tireless pursuit of these criminals is the reason we are here today,โ€ he said. He also praised President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering support, noting, โ€œThanks to the commitment of Mr. President, we are making progress daily.โ€

Ribadu vowed that the fight against kรฏdnappers and bandits would persist beyond the release of victims. โ€œThe release of victims is not the end. We will continue to pursue these perpetrators and ensure they face justice,โ€ he assured.
