Welcome bookish buddies!💖 I'm a literary lover and book hoarder. You'll find reviews for an eclectic array of literary genres & a gravitation towards material discussing social injustices. Beyond my love of literature is my even more fervent love for the Interview with the Vampire adaptation, which has inspired me to create a readathon.

For the next two years we'll snoop onto the shelves of our beloved characters to keep us all motivated to read. Prompts will be provided with each character introduction. You can either read the exact same books I'm reading or make your own selection.

Hi Bookish Buddies!

One of the most visually engrossing movies I've seen is Neptune Frost, (2021). Written and co-directed by Saul Williams, Neptune Frost is a sci-fi film set in Burundi, East Africa focusing on a group of escaped coal miners and anti-colonialist hackers as they attempt a takeover of an authoritarian regime.

This past Tuesday, Dynasty Typewriter hosted Saul Williams and Moran Sorne for their graphic novel launch of Martyr, Loser, King. Their graphic novel is an (cyber-punk fable), extension of Neptune Frost and so considering the state of the nation I'm in and the destruction they are inflicting internationally, sitting and listening to these two gentlemen just felt where I wanted to be.

Saul Williams spoke about poetry and prose being an act of casting a spell and of cleansing a space. His advice for writers was to write as if there was a g*n to your head - write with a sense of urgency and necessity. If not, then why would you expect a reader to pick up your book?

During their Q&A session, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o was on my mind, so I asked both artists to hopefully speak on artistry as an act of decolonization. Saul Williams spoke about not compromising artistic vision, decolonizing as a revolt on any space, equating complacency to colonization, artistry as a transvergence into the radical and ultimately, our responsibility as a citizen in the core of an Empire. During the production of Neptune Frost, the outfit designs were all upcycled from e-waste as to not contribute to the problem of excess he discusses in his film.

Morgan Sorne had so many words of wisdom, but what stuck out to me the most from his conversation was a question and intention he posed to the audience. Who are your protectors and who are your inhibitors?

Here's a question to you posed by Williams. How can you weaponize your art?

BIOS:
Saul Williams is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, musician, poet, writer, and actor. He is known for his blend of poetry and alternative hip hop.

Morgan Sorne, known in his solo music project as SORNE, is an American singer-songwriter, composer, multi-media artist, music producer, and actor.
