‎I can't believe that, just as I started to get back into uploading consistently on YouTube, this would happen.

‎Sorry, I usually never post anything serious like this, but I can't keep up the cheery persona in this condition. YouTube is literally about to pull a technology version of "why don't my kids talk to me anymore" and we all know it.

‎The AI age verification update does NOT protect anyone, it leaves kids vulnerable, it leaves adults vulnerable. YouTube is pulling the rug from underneath all of us. I wanted to make a video on this instead, but not only do I have absolutely zero motivation when looking at this dystopian situation. But also, after seeing what's happened to other creators? I'm genuinely worried I'm gonna be banned for speaking up. It's true that YouTube has been silencing people who were addressing this issue for the past month.

‎Straight from the horse's mouth, the AI age verification update is to """help provide the best and most age-appropriate experiences and protections""". It will flag, not only your account, but your whole IP address, as being under 18 if you watch anything that YouTube's AI determines to be "for kids". The only way to refute it is by either sharing a 6 second video of your face or YOUR WHOLE ID/ CREDIT CARD INFO!!!

‎The only thing this new act does is 1. STEAL people's information and identity 2. Reinforce the idea to children that lying about your personal information is the only way to remain online 3. Communicate to adults that they can only watch things with violence, dark colors, and otherwise non-kid-friendly stuff if they wanna remain on the platform.

‎If YouTube truly wanted to HELP protect children, they would remove the hundreds of thousands of bots, predators and explicit ads off their site. That being said, it is NOT YouTube's job to protect children. Parents are always first and foremost the protectors of their kids, and it is their responsibility to monitor anything the kids might watch on their device. Not the company. NEVER the company.

‎Tom Scott actually made a great annotation to all this all the way back in 2014: PRIVACY IS DEAD. Except he was too optimistic. We, as the consumers, get absolutely NOTHING out of this. There is no exchange of information in the light of technological innovation. This is only a deliberate invasion of our rights. It was never about the kids.

‎Just in one more day, YouTube will update with this new update in the UK, the US, and Australia on August the 13th. People in those countries have already decided to boycott YouTube on that day and everyday after until the issue is resolved. In my humble opinion, as somebody who lives on the complete other side of the world, I will also be boycotting YouTube as much as possible. Sadly, I cannot uninstall YouTube as it's a system app for me, but I will disable it and try to use it the least I can.

‎DON'T THINK YOU CAN'T BE AFFECTED BY THIS THOUGH!! It is only a matter of time before it rolls out in other countries, too. If millions of people around the world band together and show backlash to this before it even reaches them, it will only show YouTube that this is NOT the solution. That they will be losing users from this. That they will be losing MONEY from this. Things like this only stick around because the temporary inconvenience of inaccess to the internet outweighs the abstract concept of losing our anonymity for most people.

If you are looking for YouTube alternatives: Mainstream platforms like Twitch and TikTok can be used for longform and shortform content respectively. But I would err on the side of caution considering YouTube was also a "trusted" platform for most people before this. Smaller platforms like Bilibili, the internet archive, the wayback machine, newgrounds etc. also work. The main thing is PLEASE use any platform other than YouTube. (frankly, I'd say don't even use anything owned by Google. But I understand that's not possible for everyone)

Use Reddit, Tumblr, Discord, 4chan, Twitter, Netflix, ANYTHING. It's near back to school season, go be out in the real world, take a detox from the internet, do something productive in your spare time. Learn a new language, start writing a book maybe, draw that thing you wanted to, learn how to cook something, connect with your friends and family. Show YouTube that AI and technology is not all there is. Show YouTube that tracking our every click and swipe doesn't mean they can control us.
