Values at most grades are similar to Philadelphia Wheat pennies. Unless it has a Mint error, a coin will usually be worth only a cent if itโ€™s brown or red and brown.

Red examples graded MS62 are valued by the PCGS at $5, rising to $28 at MS65, and $160 at MS67. 59 coins have been certified at MS67+, and those are each worth around $725.

Just as with Philadelphia pennies, quality tops out at MS68. Only eight red 1940 Denver pennies have been certified at that level. The PCGS values them at $10,000 a pop.

Some people refer to these coins as Indian Head Nickels. Others call them Buffalo Nickels. Both names need slight correction since we now say Native American instead of Red Indian. Also, thatโ€™s a bison on the back of the coin, not a buffalo. As we dig into the significance of these clarifications, letโ€™s explore the 1928 Buffalo Nickel Value and the factors that affect it.

In 1928, the San Francisco Mint made 6,936,000 Buffalo Nickels with the S Mint Mark. And on 1st July 2009, an MS 67 sold for $46,000. Only two coins are known in that grade. PCGS estimates their value as $46,500 in January 2025. PCGS also estimates the January 2025 value of an MS 67+ at $67,500. So far, no samples of this coin have sold though they do exist.

The 1941 Jefferson Nickel, designed by Felix Schlag, features a left-facing portrait of Thomas Jefferson on the obverse and his Monticello residence on the reverse. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, it was minted in three locations: Philadelphia (no mint mark), Denver ("D" mint mark), and San Francisco ("S" mint mark).

The Philadelphia mint also issued 27,995,000 VDB pennies in 1909. Brown specimens are worth about $3 to $450, depending on their qualities. Red-brown coins are pricier, and you should pay $22 to $828 per one, except for pennies in MS 68 grade. These collectible pieces cost $18,000 to $22,000.

The most expensive 1909 VDB red pennies typically cost $40 to $1,200. The only exception is those with MS 68 ranking. Since they are scarce, you can expect an estimated price of $55,000 to $66,000.
