Today is World Schizophrenia Day.
When we made Machination (2022), we set out to tell the story of a woman battling internal chaos as the world outside descended into lockdown. What’s not often known is that Maria — played powerfully by Steffi Thake — is living with undiagnosed schizophrenia.
In shaping Maria’s world, we spoke with psychologists and drew inspiration from films like Clean, Shaven to authentically portray the isolation, confusion, and compulsions that can accompany the condition — especially when left untreated.
Steffi’s deeply raw performance earned her multiple Best Actress awards at international festivals, and we’re incredibly proud of how Machination has resonated with audiences struggling with their own mental health journeys.
