Before Egypt raised its pyramids or Greece shaped philosophy, the world’s very first cities rose from the marshes of ancient Mesopotamia. In this epic journey through time, we explore Uruk, Ur, and Eridu—the legendary Sumerian cities that birthed kings, gods, and the very concept of civilization.
Uruk, the metropolis of innovation, gave the world writing, monumental temples, and the epic tale of Gilgamesh. Ur, the sacred city of the moon god Nanna, dazzled with royal tombs and golden treasures buried beneath the sands. And Eridu, the oldest of them all, whispered myths of creation and stood as the spiritual birthplace of Sumer.
From the invention of cuneiform to ziggurats that touched the heavens, from divine kingship to the mysteries of Sumerian religion—this episode unlocks the stories, ruins, and riddles of the first urban centers ever known.
If you love ancient mysteries, lost cities, and the origins of human greatness, this is one journey you don’t want to miss.

The position of Cyprus in the north-eastern Mediterranean and its wealth of natural resources led to close contact with the neighbouring mainlands and Greece to the west. According to the Roman writer Pliny the Elder, Cyprius (Latin: Cypriot) also meant the metal copper. The people of Cyprus had grown rich from mining copper and shipping ingots of metal across the Mediterranean. The fertile island also produced timber, wine, textiles, corn and medicinal plants. The Ashmolean's collections illustrate the wealth of ancient Cyprus, its cultural and commercial connections, and the daily life of its people.
After it was seized by Alexander, the city gradually became part of the Greek-speaking world of the eastern Mediterranean. This was the period in which it acquired the Greek name of Byblos. Around 64 BC, Byblos became part of the Roman Empire. It was no longer an important port, but reinvented itself, this time as a 'sacred place' and a place of pilgrimage The ancient city was completely rebuilt to make space large new complexes, bathhouses for temple and a theatre. The new districts were connected by monumental streets. Where the Temple of the Obelisks had once stood, a temple complex was built to Adonis, the most important local god. Byblos continued to exist after the Roman period, but from then on, the old stories lost their power and new religions and myths emerged
