What’s the difference between EMDR and Brainspotting and how do therapists actually choose between them?
Both EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and Brainspotting are brain-based trauma therapies but they work through different access points in the nervous system.
🧠 EMDR is a structured, eight-phase, evidence-based treatment that uses bilateral stimulation to help the brain reprocess stuck traumatic memories and install more adaptive responses. It’s widely researched and often the first trauma therapy people hear about.
👁️ Brainspotting works by identifying precise eye positions that correlate with where trauma, emotion, or activation is held in the brain and body. It allows for deeper subcortical processing, often with less narrative and more somatic awareness.
For clients, the difference often feels like:
• EMDR = reorganizing memory networks
• Brainspotting = accessing what words can’t reach
For therapists, the question isn’t EMDR or Brainspotting, it’s when and how to use each based on:
• nervous system capacity
• attachment style
• dissociation level
• developmental vs single-incident trauma
This is educational not therapy and meant to help clients and clinicians understand why trauma treatment isn’t one-size-fits-all.

EMDR isn’t just about processing trauma, it’s about teaching the brain how to feel safe, good, and connected again.
What if trauma therapy wasn’t only about revisiting pain but about training your brain to recognize safety, joy, and possibility again?
Most people think EMDR is just for trauma memories.
Clinicians know that’s only half the story.
🧠✨ The Positive Affect Protocol in EMDR works by strengthening states of calm, connection, confidence, and relief so your nervous system doesn’t just survive… it learns what okay actually feels like.
For clients, this can feel like:
• finally accessing calm without forcing it
• confidence showing up without positive thinking
• relief that stays after the session ends
For clinicians, it’s about:
• installing adaptive networks
• expanding tolerance for positive states
• repairing the nervous system’s capacity for safety
This is not “toxic positivity.”
It’s neuroscience-informed, attachment-aware resourcing — and it changes how healing unfolds.
