🌎 WHAT WOULD A US WAR WITH IRAN MEAN FOR THE CARIBBEAN? 🇮🇷🇺🇸🌴

The Caribbean cannot afford to ignore the growing possibility of a US–Iran war.

If military conflict erupts, disruptions to oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz could send global energy prices soaring. For Caribbean nations heavily dependent on imported fuel, the consequences could include higher petrol prices, more expensive electricity, rising food costs, and increased pressure on already struggling households.

Tourism, transportation, agriculture, and government budgets could also come under pressure. A wider conflict could expose the region to additional geopolitical and economic risks.

Trump has indicated that military action could come after the US midterm elections, but the timing and likelihood of a war remain uncertain. Given the unpredictability of international developments, the Caribbean must consider the risks rather than assume it has time to prepare.

THE BIG QUESTION: IS THE CARIBBEAN PREPARED TO WEATHER THE ECONOMIC FALLOUT OF ANOTHER MAJOR WAR?

Should Caribbean governments develop emergency plans to protect their citizens from a potential energy and food-price crisis?

King Charles says he is “not prepared to apologize” for Britain’s role in slavery or support reparations—even as he prepares to visit the Caribbean.

Is this an insult to Jamaica and the Caribbean, especially after the Jamaican delegation travelled to Britain to meet him while he was on vacation? Why couldn’t they have waited for his Caribbean visit?

If Africans and Europeans were both involved in the trafficking and enslavement of Africans, WHO should actually pay reparations today?

Should ordinary citizens be held financially responsible for actions committed generations ago?

If governments such as Britain or the United States are expected to pay reparations, remember that their tax revenues come from citizens — including Black citizens. Would some Black taxpayers effectively be paying into a reparations system that could ultimately benefit people abroad, while reducing the money available for their own families, communities and remittances?

And what about the private institutions and families that accumulated wealth from slavery and the slave trade?

What about banks, insurance companies, trading companies and other financial institutions whose historical records may document involvement?

If reparations are justified on the basis of historical responsibility, should the financial burden fall primarily on ordinary taxpayers, governments, private institutions, wealthy families — or some combination of these?

And if financial institutions that participated in the slave economy are expected to contribute, how would their liabilities be calculated?

WHO SHOULD PAY — AND WHO SHOULD NOT?
